What does a liberal believe?
When someone asks you why you are a liberal or what does a liberal believe, this may be something for you to consider.

The beliefs of this liberal:

I am for equal opportunity for all, regardless of race, sex, religion, national origin, economic condition, sexual orientation, disability, or class.

I am for the human rights and human freedom of every person on this planet.

I am for a common sense foreign policy that engages our allies rather than alienates them.

I am for a real War on Terrorism, that focuses on finding, stopping, and eliminating terrorists who would strike our country, rather than engage in wild goose chases in other nations.

I am for the adequate funding and equipment of our military.

I am for universal health care for all Americans, whether public or private.

I am for the maintenance of Social Security.

I am for the adequate funding of public education.

I am for the protection of wildlife.

I am for clean air and water.

I am for the Kyoto Protocol, believing that a cleaner environment is worth the loss of jobs.

I am for research in clean energy sources.

I am for the separation of church and state.

I am for the freedom of Americans to worship God as he or chooses.

I am for the freedom of Americans not to worship a God.

I am for a woman's right to choose.

I am for equal marriage rights.

I am for clean, transparent elections in every nation on earth, including the United States.

I am for democracy in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Syria, Egypt, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Belarus, China, Vietnam, North Korea, Cuba, Sudan, Congo-Kinshasa, Liberia, Mauritania, etc., among others.

I am against all types of bigotry, both from the right and from the left.

I am against blatant ignorance and stupidity, both from the right and from the left.

I am against totalitarian regimes everywhere that suppress dissent in their societies, both of the right and of the left.

I am against apologists for totalitarian regimes, both from the right and from the left.

I am against fascism.

I am against Communism.

I am against Islamic fundamentalism.

I am against Christian fundamentalism.

I, as a Christian, am against the use of my faith as an instrument of hatred against those who are different.

I am against the gigantic role of corporate money in our elections and in the making of public policy and legislation.

I am against legislation that gives incentives to companies to pollute the environment rather than clean it up.

All of which, this liberal passionately and fervently believes in and strives for.

2. your post kind of reminds me of that great Kennedy quote
If by a “liberal” they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a “liberal,” then I’m proud to say I’m a “liberal.”
– President John F. Kennedy

it still rings true today...great post BTW

3. A few more important "for" points...
I am for engaging the brain, critically thinking about things.

I am for having the ability to change my mind once I learn more about the topic.

I am for intellect, education, development of the mind.

4. For me, being a liberal can be summed in one statement.
I am for all that promotes the common good and helps the many rather than the few. Everything about my personal beliefs is derived in some manner from that statement. As liberals, we are carrying on the tradition that originated hundreds of years ago in so many places of the world, where the population at large decided they would make a more equitable society and fight against the rich and powerful.

7. A liberal is for
...forming a more perfect Union
...establishing justice

In short, everything that the Preamble to the Constitution says.
