I think I figured out why they support putting the troops in harms way, just as their chickenhawk idols supported doing in Vietnam but didn't want to go themselves. They really do believe in boogiemen, people out to get them all over the place, and they don't want to go fight them themselves. They're afraid the troops might wake up and decide not to go, so they that's why they 'support' them.
