"Fuck you. This is my show" Steve Earle's response to a freeper fan at
the Raleigh NC concert last night! In case you missed it (ha) he had played in Crawford at Camp Casey and is bringing the anti-war message to his tour. A friend said he was very vocal at his show and urged everyone to come to DC Sept 24. About 1/3 of the audience was on board with his statements. Someone spoke up with a loud negative comment and that was his come back. Go Steve!!!!! :7  :yourock:

1. Yep
I've heard of republicans saying they want to go to a show and not be preached about politics. Well, that's why you find out before you go where they stand. Nobody makes you go, and the last time I looked the artist can sing whatever they want. You can also get a review of the concert from other fans who have been before.

I've met him twice in the past decade. We communicate from time to time when things get hard. When he found out Ben joined the Marines he cried with me on the phone. We talked just last week. Ben is going to Ramadi on September 4th. Stevie and his family sent mine a big bunch of flowers. This guy is an amazing human people.

Edited to add:

Here's one mention of it from commondreams.org from 2003 — but no picture...

http://www.commondreams.org/views03/1216-16.htm

"Saddamania is red hot. His billing is as preemptive as the war itself. The cover of Newsweek and Time bumped Howard Dean and Jesus Christ respectively for the image of the homeless dictator. Like Bush and company those venerable publications know what sells."

And here's a copy (from an old entry at DFA's blog) on the MSNBC (Newsweek) site (remove the space before .jpg to just see the pic):

18. At least 2/3 were not vocal about their views. We are in a red state,
although Raleigh (city) is blue and our whole area (metropolitan) is blue. But Steve Earle IS viewed by some as a good 'ol boy singer/songwriter from Texas. It is very possible that many who know of him and like his music, don't know of his politics.

Edited on Sun Aug-28-05 11:11 AM by Rob H.
Steve Earle (or Michael Stipe or Bono or any liberal/progressive entertainer): "They should just shut the hell up and sing. I don't go to their shows to hear them spouting their politicial dribble (sic)."

Conservative musician--Ted Nugent, for example: "Mmmm, Nugent. (Homer Simpson drool noise)."

There's a guitar site I used to post on a while back, and this is exactly the dichotomy that exists there. To be fair, there are a few liberal voices on the site, but they're mostly drowned out by vociferous conservative assholes.

Edited to add: Go, Steve! :toast:

27. Most people, if not all but that one freeper, were *very* supportive
of what Earle was saying.

It was a crowd of progressive people anyway. Old hippies, new hippies, and liberals. It was held at the NC Museum of Arts grounds.

You'd have to be a freakin' moron to show up to Steve's show and not expect him to talk about his anti-war politics.

for years and years.

He's been anti-war, anti-death penalty, and vocal about these things for years.

If people had bothered to know anything about him, they would've known that before they came to concert.

That being said, 99% of the people there were VERY supportive of what he was saying.
