Attention liberals: Move to Colorado!
We need you to turn this state blue. We're well on the way already after electing two more Democratic members of Congress (both named Salazar) and retaking both houses of the Legislature for the first time since 1960! If you move here you will never have to worry about:

Hurricanes
Earthquakes
Tsunamis
Floods
Insects (really, no bugs and few mosquitoes)

We only have occasional tornadoes and the forest fires are easy enough to get away from, and even easier to avoid if you live in a city. In addition you will get:

Awesome skiing
Fun fun summer activities
Lots of new progressives and liberals to be friends with if you all move here.
A safe place to live.

Colorado: hurricane and earthquake free since 1876!

5. And the winters are quite mild
People from out of town always ask us about our bad winters. Huh?

3. I'm going to Denver/Longmont tomorrow!
Just a 2 day business trip, but I'm looking forward to seeing a little bit of the state as I drive from DIA to Longmont. I'm guessing Longmont itself isn't that scenic...maybe I will detour on my way home and go through Boulder...

7. Longmont is ok.
If you're not used to the mountains, than the view will still look good (even though the really good views are to be found in the mountains when they're all around you and not just on one side). I think the bonus is the drive through Denver, which in my opinion is a really great city.

9. I am an amateur photographer...
which is one of the only things that makes all this business travel worthwhile. I'm hoping for some good vistas and photo opportunities.

Denver does have that cute Jake Plummer...

4. Yeah, but there are forest fires, avalanches and blizzards.
I love Colorado though for the scenic beauty. Every place has it's plusses and it's drawbacks. Back in the seventies people from California were moving to Colorado because they were more liberal than California then. What happened?

11. What happened?
I'll tell you what happened! All the conservatives realized they weren't going to get their way in CA and moved to CO! The city of Colorado Springs (where I'm posting from right now) offered people like Dobson and their organizations big fat tax breaks to move here and create jobs. Unfortunately for us, the state population was really low then and the conservative CA refugees tipped the statewide balance of power.

Just move to Denver, it's safe there ;)

15. We rarely get blizzards along the front range
Maybe every 4 to 5 years we get a whopper. But then everything shuts down for a day and we dig out.

You mentioned that Californians moved here. I got the impression that the Californians were more conservative and brought that with them. Am I off base? Seems like it's always been a little more conservative here - at least statewide. But I'm originally from NYC, so most places feel more conservative.

19. Huh! The ones I knew were hippie types and into
recreational drugs, which they felt they were freer to indulge in and not get arrested as much there as in CA.

26. They were young families and I assume were interested
in buying homes down the line. I lost touch with them after they moved, but there was quite a few of them who moved there. They weren't druggies by any means and held down professional jobs, they just enjoyed rereational use of soft drugs and had liberal values

30. Whoever they were, they perked up our neighborhood
We live in an older suburb west of Denver. Older homes built after WW2. People who came in during the 80s and 90s could buy them cheap. But they weren't torn down as in California. They were remodeled and this kept the look of the neighborhood very folksy. We've benefited because homes that may have deteriorated over time were renovated beautifully with additions and landscaping. Whatever the political leanings of the influx, they did add to the upkeep of where we live!

17. I spent a goodly portion of my teens/twenties in Colorado.
Returned often until I got my parents moved west. There used to be a saying: "Don't Californicate Colorado." Great bumper sticker! Didn't work (as witnessed by Vale, Aspen and many other once-small and lovely towns in the mountains), but as with so much that goes on, it was the money. Big big money from developers investing in condos, ski resorts, all the things that assure "ordinary residents" can no longer afford to live in the small and lovely towns. I've only been back once in the last 27 years, this was two years ago. Took a train ride through the Rockies and was pleased to see the scenery's as gorgeous as it was in my younger days. I must say, I have a really soft spot in my heart for my former home state. Hope it goes from red to blue!

Edited on Sun Aug-28-05 01:59 PM by Cleita
there. Although for scenic beauty I still prefer Northern Idaho in the lake country, which is amazingly getting more liberal with many environmentalists moving in there.

Maybe that's what Coloradoans should do, invite the environmentalists in to bring in more liberals.

25. Yes, Estes Park and the Trail Ridge Road are truly spectacular!
Spent a lot of time there while growing up. I love Nrn Idaho, too, have enjoyed the incredible scenery there a few times. Glad to hear they're getting more liberal up that way. The white supremcists who flourished there for so long were awfully worrisome. The environmentalists engaged in a long-fought battle against the monied interests in Colorado, if I recall correctly. Probably still are. May their numbers increase!

13. I've loved Colorado all my life
at least the mountains, lakes, and trees. I just moved 900 miles to a different state, and I have no plans to move again in this lifetime, but if I wanted to go inland, Colorado would be the place.

I spent the summer of '67 in Grand Lake, and the summer of '71 in Estes Park. I'm sure they've changed a lot in the ensuing decades, but some of my best childhood memories, and a lifelong love of mountains, rocks, streams, and evergreens were born then.

Grand Lake and Estes Park are probably the same as before.
I was up there two months ago for a wedding and drove through both places. I don't think Grand Lake has changed since the '50s. Very, very touristy and kitchy, but still cool.

16. Been seriously considering it....
We've been casually looking at stuff around Denver via the internet. The cost of living is decent, there's a lot there, and the job market looks very stable. It's a lot less "red" than where I am next door in Kansas, that's for sure!

32. And Cave Of The Winds
I spent the best part of my childhood in Colorado Springs. I lived in a big Victorian style house on Nevada Avenue. It's where I saw thousands of Coloradans line the streets when John F. Kennedy rode through town, stopping his open car right in front of my house and thanking the people for their warm welcome. It's where I got hooked on spelunking, exploring the caves in Williams Canyon.

31. We could go trick or treating at DD's place!
The Colorado Springs area is beautiful! Too bad Dodson and the holy rollers took the place over. I'll bet they moved in because all those guys from Ft Carson who were hanging out at the topless bars, needed saved and sanctified! I can see old Dokkktor D now, at the old Outer Limits bar of down at the Honey Bucket, LOOKING............................. for some souls to save.

Colorado Springs is a fun place and the mountains around it are awesome. I loved going up to Victor and Cripple Creek, or over around Royal Gorge and panning for gold. Needless to say I never did strike it rich. Fort Carson wasn't so great though.
