Oh BooHoo!! A rant about a woman, her SUV and her plight on Headline News
:grr:

So I'm flipping through the channels and I'm catching this story on Headline news about the gas prices. Some woman from somewhere in the middle of the United States is crying the blues because of how much money she spends on gas. She's cutting back to the necessities and even shopping at the Dollar store, but she leaves the kids at home becaue it makes her so sad when they cry for things and she can't afford to buy them those things anymore. All because the gas prices are so outrageous.

Tugging at your heartstrings yet?

Then at the very end you see her filling up her vehicle and driving off....

in a 2005 oversized Chevorlet SUV (And I knew it was 2005 because the announcer mentioned it was 2005)

Oh give me a fucking break. Your your family is making major cutbacks to the necessities and discount shopping so you can afford a fucking $30k vehicle that eats about $60 minimum a week for gas. Was your fucking head in the sand when the gas prices started going through the roof about 3 years ago? You could have bought something a little bit less expensive and maybe a little smaller in size in order to PUT YOUR DAMN FAMILY FIRST INSTEAD OF WORRYING ABOUT YOUR HUSBAND'S SMALL PENIS WHO NEEDS A GIANT SIZE SUV IN ORDER TO JUSTIFY HIS EXISTANCE.

How do these IDIOTS get on Major Network News - she should be on major DUMBASS news. Family so fricking vain they would put their family in peril (and probably major debt) just to impress the neighbors with a Debtmobile

:grr:

3. Some cars and mini vans have worse milage than suvs. So let's hate
all drives of v6 & v8 cars regardless of the model and size.

There are some hybrid SUVs out there. Do we hate them too?

If the dad or mom does car pool do we hate her because she volunteered cuz she has the big car and can carry many kids at once?

My mother's Dodge Durango gets 23MPG but even they quit driving it in favor of their other car - an Mercury Sable station wagon that gets 27mpg.

51. The poster reported this as an oversized SUV.
It's not gettting better gas mileage than a mid-size car or a mini van, so let's refrain from going into places we don't need to go.

As for the hybrids, Ford makes what? 3,000 a year or so of its SUV. And Toyota chose to use its hybrid technology on a big SUV. Sure, it gets better gas mileage, but most of the technology went toward increasing power.

A little context can go a long way.

4. Anyone remember that long thread here about families needing SUVs
to fit in carseats plus a couple kids?

I understand why young parents feel like an SUV is the best vehicle for their family. There is also the safety factor. I sure don't feel as safe in a sedan as I do in an SUV.

12. SUV's are actually not as safe as they are hyped to be
Drive one if you want, but be aware that the verdict is out on how safe the are.

Remember the tendency for many to be top-heavy and rollover when the driver would perform quick evasive maneuvers at highway speeds?

Not to mention that the sheer bulk of SUVs disproportionately endanger anyone who may stray into or be in the path of an SUV.

more here:

http://www.suv.org/safety.html
--snip--
SUVs do not have to meet the same safety standards as passenger cars. The double standard exists due to arcane federal rules classifying SUVs as light trucks. Less rigid rules mean occupants of SUVs are not protected by the side-impact crash safety standards or strength requirements for bumpers required on standard passenger cars.

Give me a Volvo wagon any day over a glorified pick-up truck. (Although, I'm sure the Honda product is very fine and much safer than anything else out there.)

32. The CR-V was the worst SUV on the road
for rollovers. Consumer Reports refused to even give the car a safety rating. So Honda redesigned it and it is now one of the safest cars on the road.

I couldn't begin to afford a Volvo. But I did test drive a couple.

It was a little shocking, but at least they worked it out.

I live in Atlanta and I'm beginning to think I can't afford to NOT have a Volvo any longer (I'm currently driving a 11 year old car!). There are SUVs everywhere and I no longer feel safe in my little car.

18. That's why I don't get too upset if a large family has a large vehicle to
drive around in but, ironically, the woman in the original post is saying she's leaving the kids at home because she doesn't want to hear the kids whining about not getting what they can't afford. Doesn't it kinda defeat the purpose of having an SUV if only you are the one in it?

BTW, I'm not raggin' on ya - it's just an observation.

At least in my state. Unless the little darlings are just too spoiled to have to take a bus, or mumsy doesn't want them mingling with those trashy kids who are so poor they have to take the bus. I have seen moms who drive their kids 1/2 a block to the school bus stop in their SUV. Let's see, do I want to drive an older/cheaper vehicle, let the kids take the school bus and save some money toward their college?
Sounds like a plan to me.

25. As an other poster mentioned ...
... I saw this story about a week ago. The woman was unwilling to give up her Lexus (SUV).

I'm not even going to address the SUV issue ...

The issue with this story is that this woman was VERY unsympathetic, (I don't want to make a judgment about the woman herself because we all know how skewed the media can be with any story) she was portrayed as the poster child for crass consumerism/ consumption ... motivated by myopic greed and consumerism.

I sure as hell hope this wasn't aired internationally.

My mom was a real peach. But I wouldn't have dreamed of crying for something at the market. The very thought of it feels foreign. I understand that the general standard of living has jumped over the decades. And that's not a bad thing. But it just struck me as odd.

And I do mean gentle. But I got the message. We didn't have a car back then. So, I'd have to endure a lecture walking all the way home while she dragged the cart. Not a long walk. But when you're a kid and mom is in the mood for a history lesson on the great depression it could feel like a lifetime! I sure miss her.

Who needs an SUV? Well, if I towed a boat a lot I might but I'd probably buy a used truck since it wouldn't be a daily driver.

a 97 Ford Taurus thats gets 28mpg on the highway
a 92 Toyota pickup that gets about the same-has camper top.
I used to have a 86 Toyota Camry that I bought at a Salvation Army auction for $600 and drove for 8 years until I wore it out-300+K miles
It got about 34 miles on the highway.
All these were roomy enough for my 300+ lbs butt.

around 2002 about a doctor with 6 kids in Austin. He made $300,000 a year and couldn't afford to live the way he wanted to. His wife complained that they had to clean their own pool. The baby's crib was in the huge walk-in closet and they had to vacation in San Antonio while their friends went to Colorado. Boo hoo.
