Katrina is only a prelude
Rising sea levels over the next few decades will be the end of New Orleans - it is too wet already and too close to sea level.

3. Yes
many coastal cities are in danger, but I think New Orleans will be one of the bellweathers.

2. Something that I read yesterday said
that if New Orleans were destroyed, it wouldn't be rebuilt for that very reason.

6. We just heard that there's another hurricane,
90 mph winds, coming in right behind Katrina. This could be a very long hurricane season. I'm not really a religious person, but I am certainly sending my most sincere wishes to the Gulf coast residents for their safety.

14. Current Atlantic/Gulf weather map... no other hurricane out there yet...

There is a tropical depression (#13) way out in the Atlantic, but no other hurricane at present. Let's just hope it stays that way.

15. Maybe it was that "TD 13" out there
 My husband's the one who's been glued to the weather channel and he had mentioned it this morning.

Whatever -- I think it would be great if the hurricanes would just stop for this fall (not likely, I guess).

8. N.O. is already below sea level
so just build higher levees.

As for raising sea levels in the next few decades, they are at best going to be a few inches.

9. the few inches is deceptive
an increase of a few inches in sea level could claim many miles of coastline..because the ocean is so much larger than the landmass. Also in any places where the water is diverted by mountains or levees it will flood that much more in surrounding areas

13. Yap, Earth's gonna have it's own Great Red Spot
If climate change significantly slows down the gulf stream a significant thermal imbalance will develop between the gulf and north atlantic. Hurricanes distribute thermal imbalances.

The storm state will not be permanent but it will certainly feel like it.

okay it's just a scary speculation. but you never know.....
