Please donate to help Louisiana's animals with and without homes!
http://www.la-spca.org/forms/donations.htm

The Louisiana SPCA has evacuated twenty-five dogs that are being held pending court cases and are on their way to Baton Rouge Animal Control to ride out Hurricane Katrina. Approximately 250 animals, strays and adoptables, will be moved to the Houston SPCA this evening in two 16’ climate-controlled trucks.

This is obviously a very intense undertaking for the shelter amd the shelter itself is said to flood extremely easily and will likely sustain major damage.

Please donate whatever you can - even if only a dollar or two - to help their evacuation expenses and also the extra expenses they will have after the storm, as they will surely be inundated with misplaced, lost, and abandoned animals.

Thanks, guys!

2. Horses are always difficult to evacuate...
Hopefully, people with horses will take them with and get them to high ground somewhere out of the direct path of the hurricane.

God, I am so worried about all the pets. People can always leave town, get a ride, go to a shelter, or a hotel. Animals often aren't so lucky.

I wouldn't leave my child, nor would I leave my pets. They're family members and wherever they go (or don't go) is where I am.

24. It would be hard.
I have horses, and always worry about what I'd do if we had to evacuate and also having enough water for our family, the kitties, the bunnies, AND the horses.

15. I feel so, so sorry for people who did not understand the
magnitude of this storm and who did not leave in time to take their pets and for the people who could not afford to evacuate either themselves or their pets.

At the very last moment when you have to choose to save your life by going into a shelter that does not take pets or to stay outside and die with your pets - what do you do?

At this point, hours before the storm is arriving, if there was absolutely no way I could get out, I would be thinking of getting a vet to euthanize my dogs. My dogs are furry extensions of my heart and to think of them being terrified, to think of them drowning alone - or drowning with me frantically trying to save them - it is too much.

The loss of human and animal life and love is going to be too great to understand or experience.

Peace to all.

44. I would sooner die than leave my dog behind.
not a doubt in my mind. My dog is small enough that I would sneak her into a shelter, if they kicked me out, we'd be trying to make it together....I would NEVER leave her behind. (since you asked)

I'd also put on her lifejacket and hope we didn't get hypothermia. (yes, I have a doggie lifejacket!)

20. On shelters accepting pets (and important links)

I work for a pet rescue group in Central Florida. Last year, we were hit by three hurricanes. Most (human) shelters do not accept pets, so many pet owners simply left their animals at home. When the storms blew out windows or when trees knocked out walls, the pets ran and often never returned. Animal shelters were inundated with found dogs and cats. IF THE ANIMALS WERE NOT MICROCHIPPED OR WEARING IDENTIFICATION, THEY WERE DESTROYED WITHIN ONE HOUR OF THEIR ARRIVAL AT THE SHELTER. The shelters had simply run out of room, and that was their policy.

Please, please put a collar on your pets with ID NOW-even if you are evacuating with them.

Also, La Quinta Inns and many Motel 6s accept pets.

That's excellent info - especially that LaQuintas and most Motel 6s accept pets.

I have been planning for awhile to microchip all my guys - I'll definitely start making appointments for all 14 kitties tomorrow.

Another great charity is Noah's Wish (www.noahswish.org). They are sending a crew down there Tuesday, and sending more volunteers as needed. They are an animal advocacy group that only works to rescue animals in disasters...wonderful group.

Thanks for spreading the word...keep it up! :hi:
