There's been enough attacks on liberals through Hollywood as there is. This will just be used as more evidence of the "liberal control of the media."

They are regular people just like you and me and have every damn right to say whatever they want and participate in peace movements as well. If a celebrity was a rightwinger I'd still defend them too. I get soooo tired of this "sit down and entertain me" crap. Like they're not people too. They have their Constiution rights too!

It was also many in Hollywood that stood against McCarthy, too. They are all citizens and they all have a voice. Anything assigning anything more to it because of their "star status" is reading too much into it themselves.

Pride has nothing to do with it.
As far as those celebrities go, I don't need them to speak for me. I speak well enough for myself. They are free to do whatever they please, but it was my preference they stay out of this fight between ordinary people who support this war and those who oppose this war. It's our fight because our sons and daughters are dying.

Martin Sheen is as liberal as you can get, so I'm sure he cares and is general. They're apart of our society too. And remember Pat Tillman was a celebrity who died.

on entertainment, not fighting the battles that ordinary people and workers have had to deal with the whole time they're not there. I stand with the workers and the poor who have to suffer everyday from exploitation and lack of food, education, or health care. It's not as glamorous as getting a check for 10,000,000 for making a movie, but struggle and hardship never was glamorous.
Where were they when the Telecommunications Act was signed by Clinton? Where were they when NAFTA was passed, which drove under countless communities in the Northeast? Were they the workers who had to strike for a living wage? Were they around when union-busting began? Actors and their careers come and go, but workers remain.
With me, I just don't mix politics and paying the fucking bills with entertainment.

The point I'd make though is why does Sheen get the podium over, for example, a steel mill worker who lost his job because of out-sourcing who also decided to make the trip down to Camp Casey because he also opposes the war? What, is he less qualified than Sheen?

We've already won the battle here. The movement is now mainstream, Bush has been shown for the coward he is, and the RW was unable to discredit Cindy.
Plus, the hurricane has taken much of the media focus off of the protest. (As it should.)
Martin Sheen is welcome here.
Jane Fonda on the other hand...

I think the timing is just right as well. Maybe that's why he's just showing up now. I'm surprised Jesse Jackson isn't around. Heh heh. But seriously, I think enough people know what's going on and the American public isn't stupid like the rightwingers want you to believe. Just look at Bush's approval raitings! I think if Sheen, Fonda and anybody else want to show up then who the hell cares. Oh and I hope someone gets video!

That seems so little and petty of you.
She's apologized for what she did back then and said she was wrong. Immature and wrong. She's actually done that a number of times. What, exactly, do you want? Is there no possibility of redemption for her in your eyes? She is just forever condemned, without any hope of being able to move on with HER life?
Can you explain to me the mechanism by which a misguided young peace activist did something foolish and is forever banned from being involved in activism again even after apologizing?

Not to mention a whole passle of DUers.
I think this is an extraordinarily powerful explication of the issue:
Do not submit. It is extremely critical that repression be met head on and that it be resisted with every fiber in our being. There is absolutely no compromise that can be made with it. As a matter of fact, compromise is what oppression feeds on. Without compromise it would be defeated. -- Harry Belafonte, upon being asked how to survive political repression in a TV interview

34. For every liberal celebrity activist there is a |
|
Arnold, Sonny Bono, Reagan, Pat Boone, Ted Nugent, and a ton of other celebrities who have either run for office or just run their mouths in support of Republican. So granted we have better celebrities :D but they're just a bunch of hypocrites for attacking Hollywood liberals and I'm pretty certain that people who complain about "liberal control of the media" wouldn't be supporting Cindy if Martin Sheen didn't how up.

I think liberals far outnumber conservatives in Hollywood. Now, you want to throw in stupid slug "celebrities" like Ted Nugent, that skews the stats a bit, but Hollywood is and always has been decidedly liberal.
There's a reason for that. People who are actors (and in related fields, like screenwriting, directing, etc.) HAVE to have the capacity to commiserate with others, to understand the human condition in a multiplicity of different manifestations, both subtle and gross. And as we all know, it's liberals who have that capacity, and conservatives not so much, until it happens to them.
Or, as I've put it a number of times in the past, conservatives are by and large "spiritually constipated."

that everyone and everything else must stop and attend to the NO hurricane? What, exactly, would you expect him to do TODAY about it instead of being there in TX? Would you expect him to be down there driving people out of town? Or perhaps making public service announcements -- of what type?
Just what is it you think he should be doing RIGHT NOW instead of what he is doing?
