6. Just did as well
Car and 5 gal gas can (still $2.47/gallon)

Pump prices will probably jump 20 cents by morning (I think that's what markets are up to so far). All bets are off once she hits.

Discover 5% off on gasoline purchases expires on August 31st, 2005. I think I needed about 4 gallons (or less). I have a Honda Accord SE automatic. It is not the most fuel efficient car out there but given my problem(s) it is the best I could come up with. I'd have gone for a hybrid but I cannot get in or out of one of them being I need two knee replacements! *ack*

Needless to say, I don't drive a whole lot.

I paid $2.99 a gallon ... got my 5% discount TODAY ANYWAY!

Advice to all is FILL 'ER UP NOW!

60. Costco is an option
However, the Costco is a 20 mile drive for me to get to and now there are lines there (a huge commercial diesel truck the other day!). They have the lowest prices around but it is often not worth it for me to go there to fill-up given the travel distance involved. If I happen to be in the city where the Costo is, I always fill up no matter how much gasoline I need. Usually the price is about 15 or 20 cents less per gallon. However, I've heard some people criticize the gasoline they sell (quality). ?

This is quickly becoming a very sad situation. There are a lot less people driving around where I live I've noticed - a rural area with a very depressed economy. Now the poor cannot afford to drive any longer.

Will I be next on this list I can only wonder.

46. Topped Off The TDI, Filled 4 - 5 gal. Cans With Diesel
Edited on Sun Aug-28-05 08:33 PM by loindelrio
Sorry I didn't fill the 5th can, but I'm kinda leery of storing more than 20 gal. of diesel until we see how bad the damage is.

At 45 mpg (h), that will get me 900 mi., plus what's in the tank, another 720 mi.

One reason I bought the TDI (VW Diesel) was that diesel is much safer to store (it's fuel oil).

If they set the gas (diesel) ration at 8 gal./week I'll be OK.

59. I did. Price hadn't gone up yet, and I should be able to eek
2 weeks out on one tank, barring any long distance driving. $56 for 20 gallons (our only vehicle is a minivan, unfortunatly - at least it gets about 20 miles per gallon). Luckly, we just completed a move that puts me only 5 miles away from work instead of 25 miles - the only downside is that where we moved is a mile away from any public transportation; and I'm disabled.

I cringe thinking what costs - all costs - are going to be in two weeks. And I think it's time for a Costco run, instead of doing major labor day shopping. :(

63. Sunday is the day we fill up for the week
We fill the car up on Sunday for the weekly commute to work. The price for regular in our little town today was $1.54. I filled all of my gas cans today also. I now have ten gallons of gas in reserve to fuel our generator to run our basement sump pump, if necessary. Ten gallons of gas will run our generator for about three days.

Last year, Ivan caused major flooding around here. Our neighborhood was cut off by high water and landslides for nearly three days. I'm anxious about what we can expect this week. Even with the pump running continuously for nearly forty hours (removing about 1200 gallons an hour), we still had nearly four feet of water in the basement at the flood's crest.

I've been watching the weather and the remnants of Katrina are expected to move over us midweek. I'm just north of Wheeling, WV on the Ohio River. The NWS is predicting we may see 4 to 8 inches of rain from this event, about the same as we had with Ivan.

View from our front porch, about six hours prior to Ivan's flood crest...

We're prepared as we can be, but hope we don't have to go through this again.

73. wow
I paid 28 bucks for 11 gallons today, it was 2.55 here. The only good thing about it is that I drive a stickshift. Guess my husband won't be laughing at me now. ( He has an automatic.)

The other thing is that we have had artificially low gas prices for years... people in Britain and other countries are paying 5-6 bucks per gallon comparatively and have been for years. I think part of it is that we are seeing the effects of market demand and we are not the biggest requestor anymore, China is.

Still, I can't see how anyone making min. wage or not much more than that can afford to fill up their tank. Still bothers me when I see a W sticker on cars that are clearly on their last legs. :(

Please refrain from repeating the "Well, they pay more for gas in Britain" talking point. It's like comparing apples to kumquats.

The Brits have been paying obscene prices for petrol for decades. They're USED to it, it's part of their economy, and I believe that over 80% of that $6 goes for taxes. This is a new fact of life for us. I think there's going to be a rather rough "adjustment period". Our consumer culture is NOT equipped for $3 a gallon and more gasoline. Don't forget, the price of heating oil is through the roof, too, and nateral gas is supposed to be a Luxury this winter as well...

The Brits get free health care. I pay $70+ a month for prescriptions, and my "share" of the insurance that pays the rest is $55, and I'm seeing my doctor day after tomorrow, for another $15 out of pocket.

The Brits have Mass Transit, and a national network of trains and busses. We have faded pictures of a bygone era when our grannies rode the "Interurban" and the Monon ran 6 trains a day between Chicago and Indy.

AND in addition to those "artificially low" gas prices, we also have artificially low wages. Sure, they say that "Adjusted for inflation", we paid more for gas inm 1980.

Well, "Adjusted for Inflation", I made $20,000 MORE a year in 1980 than I do now. Wish I had an extra 20,000 "1980 dollars" in my pocket NOW...

I SCOWL at SUV's at the gas station now. Can't wait until the first Bush-bot says "what are YOU looking at?" I'll say "the reason we're *IN* this fucking mess, you ditto-monkey!"

75. but we have been protected from the "actual cost"
of gasoline for years by our obsession with the auto and our refusal to truly consider actual alternatives. We have always used most of the world's resources, including gasoline, and we are no longer the high bidder on many levels. And we replaced all our high mileage vehicles with more gas guzzlers after the energy crunch of the 70s.

I think we will have to change the way that we approach the transportation question as these prices continue to rise.
