If the gov't cared about us, why would gas prices spike before Katrina? If they were concerned, they'd LOWER the consumer cost so that all those potential storm victims could AFFORD to flee...

Katrina Targeting U.S. Oil Operations, gas prices likely to rise

By JUSTIN BACHMAN, AP Business Writer 1 hour, 8 minutes ago

NEW YORK - With crude oil prices already at record levels, a hurricane targeted the heart of America's oil and refinery operations Sunday, shutting down an estimated 1 million barrels of daily production and threatening to curtail refining activity in the region.

Katrina, a Category 5 storm expected to strike near New Orleans early Monday, was churning through the Gulf of Mexico. The area is crucial to the nation's energy infrastructure offshore oil and gas production, import terminals, pipeline networks and numerous refining operations throughout southern Louisiana and Mississippi....

"It's not looking real friendly here. This is unmitigated, bad news for consumers..."

Gasoline prices could see the largest spikes because so many refineries in the region could be shut down by flooding, power outages, or both, energy analysts said. The U.S. has ample crude oil supplies, even if major hurricane destruction trims Gulf oil output and foreign imports, but refining capacity is extraordinarily tight. As a result, prices for gasoline, heating oil, jet fuel and other products have flirted with records and could go even higher this week.

"If this thing knocks out significant quantities of refining capacity ... we're going to be in deep, dark trouble," said Ed Silliere, vice president of risk management at Energy Merchant LLC in New York.

2. Psssst ...
Reality: this government doesn't care about you or any of us - unless you are a live body of age to go to Iraq as cannon fodder.
And then it doesn't care about you either.

7. They capped gas prices in Hawaii, so the feds CAN do something
They capped gas prices in Hawaii, so they CAN do something...

Hawaii caps gas prices

HONOLULU (AP) - Hawaii will begin enforcing a cap on the wholesale price of gasoline next week, hoping to curb the sting of the nation's highest gas costs.

The limit would be the first time a state has capped the price of gasoline - a move critics warn could lead to supply shortages.

But many Hawaii residents are just looking for some relief from soaring costs.

"The gas prices that are continuing to go up - how am I supposed to afford it?" Nathan Slenk, a 25-year-old student at Kapiolani Community College, said as he pumped regular unleaded gas into his black sedan for $2.79 a gallon in Honolulu.

For link... source is Associated Press...

Story was off the wire for AP and in Hawaii Telegraph, but here's the same story from Aug. 25 from the Houston Chronicle...

5. Instead of complaining about the governent, I suggest everyone call
and thank their congress critters on MOnday for doing such a great job of getting an energy policy through congress. Let's face it - without this wonder piece of legislation our oil companies might actually not have gigantic profits next year because of the hurricane. And without those profits, they wouldn't be looking for ways to make our country safe from foreign oil problems - as their million dollar TV ads keep telling us every day. We all have to make some sacrifice for the illegal invasion of the second largest oil producing country in the world. The higher the oil goes, the less we the tax payers have to fork over to rebuild Iraq. I'm sure there is some amount per barrel that would make Iraq the self-sufficient country our wonderous leaders told us they would be.

8. Did anyone here not think that gas wouldn't be $3.00 by Labor day?
No matter what. If it wasn't Katrina it would be some other excuse.
