C.J. Chenier kicked ass tonight with a quick reference to Katrina
Edited on Sun Aug-28-05 10:38 PM by zulchzulu

C.J. Chenier played at a small park here in Madison tonight closing at the Orton Park Festival.

I had to go to make a connection to that town I lived at a while back and maybe feel some good vibes to change the course of Katrina.

I drove there and found a great spot at the park. You could hear C.J. (son of the master of Zydeco, Clifton Chenier) from a block away. I got a brew and got in the middle of the dancing crowd, all looking to channel into New Orleans good times.

C.J. did a medley where he did an abridged version of Professor Longhair's "Tipitina", only he changed the lyrics to "Katrina". The words were "Katrina...whoa...whoa...won't ya live my city alone..whoa...Katrina...don't you do nothing to my home..." The crowd went tearfully nuts and screamed and danced.

After doing "Iko" as the encore, C.J. said they were flying south, back into that hurricane and were heading west to Lafayette. The crowd was still.

Thank you, C.J. You gave me hope that the spiritual power that New Orleans has will overcome this storm.

1. CJ Chenier is the BEST!
That sounds like a great concert. I saw him abut 10 years ago in the Berkshires. I'd been listening to him for 5 years by then. I wish I could have been there to dance to "Katrina".

2. He is so awesome
His family and the Nevilles define New Orleans. I am thinking of them tonight.
