Poll question: Al Sharpton fans check in here (Count me as one)
I adore Al Sharpton and think he is a marvelous speaker. He was probably #2 at the Democratic Convention for best speaker (Obama was definitely #1).

Sure Sharpton can be a little bit nutty at time but alot of that was the past and even still if I want some boring-ass politico representing me I'd demand more Joe Lieberman :eyes:

So check in here if you're a fan of Al Sharpton

:hi:

3. He made the dem convention worth watching
I have a link on my home computer of his Dem Convention speech and it was quite powerful!!

I swear progressives who don't like Sharpton are buying too much of that negativity done by the neo-cons who pull this shit with any Progressive African-American speaker. God forbid we allow them to have a voice so instead we'll just trash them in the media

:grr:

he's not taken seriously in the MSM, they still refer back to the Tawana Brawley case and think he's a hack. He did make the Political debates worth watching, but the MSM will blow this off as Sharpton trying to get some TV face time.

10. I dig him...
...and I'm a New Yorker familiar with his early years. He's grown up a lot. People have a right to change and grow into something bigger and greater than what they started as. Look at Malcolm X.

Just one voting option, though? What kind of a "poll" is that? ;-)

I wanted to rally around all us Pro-Sharpton fans.

The folks who can't stand him can go sulk in a corner somewhere. Personally I think progressives with issues with Al Shaprton are buying too much of the crap being fed to them by the media.

I think he is great. He is smart, makes sense (even when he says things that at first seem nutty) and he has a way about him that you can't help like if you get past the hype and listen.

Do I agree with everything he has ever done? No, but can we say that about anyone?

40. If I held a grudge against everyone who ever made a mistake in the past...
..I'd be a very very lonely girl and I wouldn't even be able to hang out with myself

Tawana Brawley happened in 1987 and Sharpton messed up on that one. But many of my favorite politicians are from flawed backgrounds. Hell if I was using the Al Sharpton Standards to other politicians I adore and respect then I wouldn't be able to support Ted Kennedy, Robert Byrd, Bill Clinton and even Joe Biden (He plagerised in Law School).

I would hope that people learn from their mistakes and one would suspect that Al grew from where he went wrong with the Brawley incident

Edited on Mon Aug-29-05 09:38 AM by Dinger
like the blood of four little girls from Birmingham." I paraphrased there a bit, but that part of his Dem Convention speech is one that I will never forget, never. I believe it is that right (to vote) that the repugs have tried to take away (They didn't succeed completely anyway). ATo me, the right to vote and making your voice heard is the top issue, and Rev. Al eloquently brought that to the attention of this country, and I for one, thank him for it.

Also, he was the first of the Dem '04 candidates to Welcome my hero Wes Clark to the party. He said something like, "I'd rather see a new Democrtat, than an old Democrat whose been acting like a Republicqan all along." I loved that!

Heck, Clinton had an intern giving him a bj in the Oval Office, but Sharpton is somehow held to a higher standard. I guess it's because he's black and his hair looks funky, because I have not heard any other reasonable explanation.

47. About that higher standard
Reminds me of a quote from another African American, this one a journalist --

A minority group has "arrived" only when it has the right to produce some fools and scoundrels without the entire group paying for it. -- Carl Rowan

I think that could be expanded to say, "and when said fools or scoundrels don't have to spend the entire rest of their lives being reminded of it." (Same thing is happening to Jane Fonda, btw.)

44. I have come to really like Sharpton....
Back in the Tawana days, I did not like Sharpton much (and not because of that incident particularly). But I have watched him over the years and found him to be a changed man after the stabbing incident. Today I see him as one of the only folks wiling/able to speak the truth. I was thrilled to see him on the campaign trail because he and Kucinich were sometimes the only two talking about some of the issues I felt were important.

Al is just fine by me. :)
