Decorated Iraq War Veteran Challenges Cindy Sheehan

CRAWFORD, Texas, August 29 /Christian Wire Service/ -- Hiram Lewis IV, currently a Captain and JAG officer in the West Virginia Army National Guard and a GOP candidate for the U.S. Senate from West Virginia, has announced the new "Meet With Hiram" campaign targeting anti-Bush and anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan.

"Together with the conservative activist organization RightMarch.com, I will be traveling to Crawford, Texas, to demand a meeting with Cindy Sheehan," said Lewis. "If she refuses to meet with me there, I will follow her on her bus tour and continue to demand a meeting until she agrees to talk with me face-to-face."

Pledging to "dog her steps" until she meets with him, Lewis stated, "My mission is to persuade Cindy Sheehan to meet with an Iraq War Veteran such as myself and answer my questions about why she is encouraging the terrorists, endangering our men and women in uniform, and lowering troop morale." What's more, he said, " I've been calling on Cindy Sheehan to meet with me for a few weeks now. If she leaves town just as I'm getting there, everyone will know why."

Capt. Hiram Lewis, a decorated veteran of the War in Iraq, will travel to Crawford, Texas, Aug. 31-Sept. 2 seeking a meeting with Cindy Sheehan, an anti-war protester he says is "determined to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory." Capt. Lewis has three objectives: First, he wants to offer heart-felt condolences for the loss of her son, Army Spc. Casey Sheehan, who died as a hero in Baghdad on April 4, 2004. Second, Capt. Lewis wants to make sure Mrs. Sheehan supports what her son wanted to do -- see the job through in Iraq. Finally, Capt. Lewis wants to rally support to our continued success in Operation Iraqi Freedom while helping protesters understand how their efforts lower morale and endanger our troops' lives.

If this guy wants to yell over her or call her a traitor, it will be obvious that the guy will show his true freeper colors.

We can see if he can handle the truth or whether he will only be seen as a fool.

The best part about it would be that she met with him and stated her views.

19. What a ridiculous publicity stunt
as if Cindy hasn't met with any Iraqi veterans. . .who does this bozo think he is besides a wingnut politician hoping to coat his chances of being elected to office?

Does he really think he has anything new to say to Cindy Sheehan? And that she can't handle the likes of his obvious abrasive nonsense?
Isn't it just like a wingnut to target the mother of a dead soldier for personal political gain, rather than use his campaign to get some answers about our operations overseas.

We should inundate West Virginia newspapers with criticism of this creep. . .

25. "reichmarch"
Thank you for posting this! Hiram Lewis is running against Senator Robert Byrd, and the hard-core right wing is obviously very interested in ousting Byrd this time around. I was unfamiliar with this rightmarch organization, so I followed the link in the top post. It is pretty insidious:
http://www.rightmarch.com/
For starters, they say "Support Our Troops Against Cindy Sheehan!
We've had it with these radicals on the Left and their "poster girl" Cindy Sheehan, who are just encouraging the terrorists, endangering our men and women in uniform, and lowering troop morale with their antics. It's time for YOU AND I to show OUR support for the troops, our country, and our President -- and we've got just the way to do it. We're NATIONWIDE television, radio and newspaper ads in support of our President and our troops... but we need YOUR help to get them out there across America."

Well, they have thrown down the gauntlet. I hope DUers will support Byrd against this well-financed right wing darling.

48. He "likes to think of himself as some grand colossus of a candidate"
Some may not like the writer's slap at Kerry (if that's what it is), but I think the larger critique of Lewis is good.

SNIP

Hiram Lewis likes to think of himself as some grand colossus of a candidate, even though few people know him. When he went on a brief stint to Iraq last year, he made sure to get a picture taken--shades of John Kerry?--while on patrol. He posed as the conquering hero, sitting in one of Saddam Hussein's huge golden thrones, looking like a little boy in desert fatigues at Santa's photo shop at Wal-Mart during Christmas season.

85. So Lewis's idea of campaigning for office is yelling at Cindy Sheehan?
Thanks for posting the article on him, I wasn't aware he's angling to be the GOP candidate against Robert Byrd.

So, he figures he'll use a few photos of himself grimacing at Cindy Sheehan to put Sen. Byrd out of business. The author of the article is right -- this guy is a ridiculous idiot. (Not that I would underestimate what the GOP echo chamber will make out of his antics... how pathetic -- Cindy Sheehan has said from day one that her exit strategy is to leave Camp Casey on August 31st -- so what does this guy do, he plans to arrive on August 31st, probably long after the sun has set, and then crow that she's not there.

Unbelievable.

33. She's already met with other vets and would meet with him.
She's even hugged another Gold Star father who's turned against her. What makes this guy think she won't meet with him? Of course, the timing is odd, as she'll be leaving to follow Bush to Washington, so when he says that if she's gone before he gets there this week it's because he's coming, he's out of it.

We had a similar ltte in our paper last week, a vet asking Cindy to meet with him. What they don't get is that she would if they came to her, as she's gone to Bush. She's a bit busy right now, but she'll meet with anyone who wants to, from what I've read.

of avoiding him? Then I searched google and found an extened bio on him on his own website..and no where does he mention a 'decoration'..certainly nothing like a purple heart or bronze star or anything ..probably just a ribbon because he served at all.

36. Somehow, it seems that this jerk will go the route of
Monica Monica . . . the candidate who decided to legally change her name to M.M. - to bank on the "anti-Lewinsky" movement.

Yup, this guy's only going to have a platform of "I took on Cindy Sheehan!"

And on the three points he wants to make: on #1 - Yeah, right. On #3 - I think that the morale would be a bit more boosted by getting the armor that the Repukes said that John Kerry voted to hold up but passed (and yet has to appear) to the troops, along with some fresh subs . . . and how about enough feet on the ground to accomplish it - or pull out all together?

42. Gee, a JAG-off!!!!
"Decorated Iraq Veteran"=Been There Fruit Salad. How much of his tour was in fact safely behind the lines in Kuwait, I wonder??? He wasn't leading any Hamburger Hill charges...it ain't like that tee vee show! I'll bet he can count on his fingers the number of hours he spent in Iraq OUTSIDE of an air-conditioned environment. Fucker!

While kids like Casey were being blown up, he was preparing Art 15 paperwork for some schmucks who were late for formation, stole cookies from the mess hall or got caught smoking some hash behind the revetments...I'm sure he NEVER missed a meal, and has only a slight familiarity with the MRE, probably obtained during his indoctrination program.

Frankly, I hope she meets with him, and kicks his ass. He can leave his rightmarch gestapo down the road, though.

Whaddaya wanna bet he shows up just as the buses are pulling out, and claims that she "refused" to meet?

There are good JAGs, and bad JAGS...this guy is one of the latter.

Here is some interesting commentary about this assclown from a guy who is clearly a Republican--seems he is not very beloved amongst his own:

COMMENTARY: Hiram Lewis: Back to Toadyville

by Sebastian Tutte

...Hiram Lewis likes to think of himself as some grand colossus of a candidate, even though few people know him.

To the everlasting shame of the Charleston Daily Mail, they ran the picture, no doubt adding to the "Cult of Hiram" that exists only in Lewis's mind....

Lewis suffers from the same syndrome as his political master, Kris Warner, former Chairman of the WV GOP. He has absolutely no self-awareness, no consciousness as to how he's coming across when he speaks to the media. To wit:

Lewis has been seen in recent days doing the following carnival act:

Serving as dutiful Deputy to former Chairman Warner;
Turning on Warner, calling for his resignation, when he saw that this was an increasingly popular thing for him to do;
Now coming back to Papa Kris, telling the rest of the State GOP Executive Committee (many of whom have served longer than Hiram has been on earth) that Kris is "owed" $24,000 and should be repaid.
This last part is rich. Isn't this the same Hiram Lewis, who had a starring role in Warner's manipulation of the last State GOP Executive Committee meeting, helping to defeat the reformers in their attempt then to avoid a messy, protracted battle.....Time to get a real job, Hiram. Big time. You've provided many comic moments for us all, but it really is time to try out the capitalist work ethic instead of thinking that every word that falls from your mouth is truth. It isn't.

78. Apparently, this is a ploy to gain PRESS
He (and a bunch of other limpdicks) is running against Byrd. The latest candidate in the GOP inventory is named, of all things, SNUFFER, and a third, name of Lawhorn. http://www.herald-dispatch.com/2005/August/04/LNlist4.htm

This is his method of distinguishing himself from the others, because clearly he has nothing else going for him. I'm sure his opponents are thrilled--who knows, they just may pay Cindy to avoid him, it'll keep him off the rubber chicken circuit and not walking precincts, like any candidate with half a rat's ass of a chance would do...

Instead of campaigning in his home state, he is desperately trying to pull a reverse Hackett and garner some easy press. Problem is, Hackett actually did the work, and the only dogging he did was from the podium, to his supporters.

I cannot imagine why he would think that bullying a GOLD STAR MOTHER while backed by a group of THUGS called RIGHTMARCH (sounds a bit Hitlerian, frankly) will earn him any support or attention from the media. He shouldn't hold his breath--if the talking heads give him the time of day, it has to be an exceedingly slow news day, or they'll be questioning his judgment.

Edited on Mon Aug-29-05 01:26 PM by Mairead
So I wonder how he earned his decorations.

Note too that he's Hiram Lewis the Fourth -- it's mostly the very wealthy, not working people, that pass down names through multiple generations.

(edit) As I thought: his family has owned a gasolene wholesale operation for over 50 years. They're wealthy.

And his military service was first as a Ranger stationed in Georgia (no combat) and then as a JAG magistrate in Iraq (no combat).

Can you say 'propaganda machine?' I knew you could.
He talks as though the troops are consulted before being sent in, for example this statement-

Second, Capt. Lewis wants to make sure Mrs. Sheehan supports what her son wanted to do -- see the job through in Iraq.

Her son did what he was told. He was sent there to search for the WMD's that Mr.Bush swore were there. Not to intall a new form of gobernment, not to play police force, not to provide an American presence in the region for the foreseeable future.

He's going to flash his medals and rank at the American public and try to undermine Cindys credibility. I don't think it'll work.

that only the True Believers would take it seriously. Here's from their webpage: http://www.rightmarch.com/media/sheehan.pdf "Who would you want for President?" Ha!! the answer is clear! WHICH of the two received an Honorable Discharge for serving as Elite Force Aviator at a time of Great Danger to our Nation? (I'll have to work on that a leetle). Presumably, he'll be able to explain to Cindy about that "noble cause", and why it's being constantly reframed. But at least it's on a higher plane than "Bitch in a Ditch!"

It was pointed out on DU that that the itinerary of that GOP-funded "Move Amnerica Forward" outfit is a string of photo-ops. Perhaps DU (Bob Boudelang?) can dog that bogus outfit.

GO Cindy, GO! You got them spinning and frothing full time!

66. The right always does this!
They love to compare and equate things that have nothing in common. As though him soliciting her is anywhere near the same statement as her soliciting the president. She's a private citizen expressing her freedom of speech, which she has every right to do legally, morally and othewise. The president is by definition open to criticism for everything he does because he is accountable for everything to the people who elected him. So they can hound him until the cows come home and he should basically take it because that's what he signed up for. She, a private citizen, is not subject to that, nor should she be!!

For one thing, Cindy doesn't "owe" this man anything, she didn't send HIM to war- for another, has he ever asked her to meet him??? or is he just making a big show of himself.
