Mayor Nagin issued a "boil water" recommendation for water in the city - except for Algiers and the CBD due to a water main line break that may have compromised the water.

I last spoke with her late last afternoon. She was going to her cousin's house on (relatively) higher ground in the Briar Lake Subdivision. Her house is probably flooded, It almost flooded two years ago in heavy rains. My God, I hope she's OK. :cry: Her husband just died from cancer last Thanksgiving and now this.

Cell phone service was spotty and long-distance callers met busy signals on Monday as Hurricane Katrina knocked out key telecommunications hubs along the Gulf Coast.

Most long-distance and cellular providers reported trouble, while the dominant local phone provider for the hurricane zone, BellSouth Corp., did not immediately quantify the extent of storm-related service disruptions.

Sprint Nextel Corp.'s long-distance switch in New Orleans failed soon after the storm hit, meaning no long distance call could be placed into or out of the area, said company spokesman Charles Fleckenstein. Customers who tried got busy signals or recordings informing them that all circuits are busy, he said.

He's a native of New Orleans. He grew up down near the levees and the Audubon Park zoo in NO before moving to Slidell. I used to have family in NO, Mobile and Orange Beach, AL who lived through Camille and Betsy and Frederick. They have, unfortunately, since passed on.

We were just in Lacombe and NO last summer and last Thanksgiving. It was so beautiful there. My brother-in law died from cancer last Nov. We were there for the funeral. So sad.

God have mercy on LA, MS and AL.

I remember seeing TV reports of bunches of people being stranded on their rooftops for 24+ hrs..all you could see were the roofs, no houses. I thought the same thing as you. Richest country in the world, all of our military resources and we cannot even rescue any of the people. TV cameras/copters were sure whirling around the area, getting live shots of those stranded, yet not a single rescue mission?

An OLD (now dead) dear friend of mine lived through the huricane of '38 (which was terrible here in NH) - told me of waking up in his upstairs farmhouse attic, to the feel of water on his hand which was dangling off the bed- it was the Contoocook River- had he not climbed onto the roof, clung to the chimney and been rescued by someone in a row boat, he would have been swept away.

Those copters that the coast guard use to rescue the lost at sea, are pretty awesome about dealing with wild winds- i'm hoping for the best-

I have only heard very limited reports that there may possibly be catastrophic damage to areas on the northshore. Slidell was right on the left eyewall of Katrina and winds were VERY high. I am still waiting to hear more on CNN.

On MSNBC we just watched a video from Lacombe. They were showing Lake rd and it was under water.
