41. Abbeville!
Isn't Soops in Abbeville?

It's been a few years since I lived in Lafayeete (Up at the French Colony) but I worked at the Sperry-Sun office in Broussard (and some other place farther south--past the high school)

I didn't like working in the oilfield at all, but it really changes how you view a storm when you know most of the places they are talking about on CNN et al.

And I really liked New Orleans--obviously it had some violent edges, but damn, you were free to be WHOEVER you wanted to be--very little judgement made about you.

I fear the future of the Big Easy--and also every other place that got clobbered.

I wish they'd fly a pass up that way. How close to Camille's track was this? Like 15 miles?

28. Kenner/Metairie showing flooding
Lakefront is also flooded.

Looks like a fire at a marina on the lakefront. I think that is where Joe's Crabshack is in Metairie.

That helicopter pilot providing the footage is kinda all over the place.

Probably get more coherent footage tomorrow.

30. This is devastating and will go down as this nation's worst
natural disaster. My heart is breaking because whole neighborhoods are gone and where are all the people? The national news organizations were way to quick to call Louisiana as "the worst is over". The people...

37. I saw earlier that the pharmacy got cleaned out
and the ATM was busted up.
I've been though this many times in my life and I'd never pull crap like that. Relief (food, ice and water) always shows up after the storm. Busting up the corner liquor store never crossed my mind.

the worst is yet to come.

Kinda wondering why I was so worried about poor people down there... sounds like they're taking matters into their own hands. Stupid.

Diapers and canned goods. Those aren't the kind of things that people typically loot. Says a lot about their living standards in general.

39. It's going to take at least 10 years for New Orleans to recover
It's unbelievable.

Not that it's a good thing in relation to all the damage around the city, but it looks like the French Quarter survived pretty well. Having lived there for a few years, that was my deepest fear...seeing the Quarter get washed away...

I may make a journey to help out some friends who had their place get pretty damaged...near the racetrack...looks bad...

43. The video on MSNBC is of St. Bernard Parish
just southeast of New Orleans along the river.

The flyover was from the Violet Canal to the Barracks in Arabi. Everything was under water and devestated.

I used to work down there as editor of a weekly newspaper.

I also heard the MSNBC reporter returning from the Ninth Ward. This is the area of town surrounding the Industrial Canal, where there was at least one reported levee breech, and where the storm surge would have been at it's worst in town.

It was a horrific story, ending in her reporter hearing the cries of people still trapped in actics calling for help as they were being left behind for the night as they pulled in the rescue boats until morning.

For anyone who understands the comparison, this is much worse than Betsy. The flooding is more catastrophic, and more extensive.

Edited on Mon Aug-29-05 11:56 PM by fearnobush
Rt90 underwater NOLA is cut off from supplys getting in. The destruction is much worse than the media was reporting earlier today. The gutted high rises near the dome gave me the chills. The flooding as far as the eye can see is just horrifying.
