Live from Fallujah
http://www.theage.com.au/news/entertainment/live-from-fallujah/2005/08/29/1125302504555.html

On November 16 last year, Melbourne-born photographer Ashley Gilbertson sent an email from the city of Fallujah, in Iraq, to his girlfriend in New York.

It read: "Joanna, a man was shot in the face two feet in front of me yesterday as we climbed a spiral staircase in a minaret. Have not told the (news) desk yet. I just don't know what to say. It should have been me. Cleaned all the blood and brains off my cameras and face and arms, but can't wash it out of my clothes or flak and I can smell it."

It was Gilbertson's sixth day embedded with Bravo Company, First Battalion, Eighth Regiment of the First Marine Expeditionary Force, in the bloody battle for Fallujah. On assignment for The New York Times, Gilbertson, 27, describes the conflict as "without question, the most intense, horrible, scariest experience in my entire life".

<snip>

He did not capture all of these events on film — often it was too dark or too dangerous, the emotions "too raw", or the images simply too bloody.

1. Unfortunately this will get locked because its not LBN
Edited on Mon Aug-29-05 06:34 PM by NNN0LHI
The thing is though in case anyone hasn't noticed this is the only way we are getting any information out of Iraq any more. These guys are litterally risking their lives to bring us this stuff and it will be jammed into the Editorial dungeon nonetheless in a jiffy. Somethings wrong.

2. excellent point NNN0LHI
I often think it would be very helpful to have a forum dedicated to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan where all articles are allowed.

5. This news article does belong in LBN
here are the rules:

1. Do not post opinion pieces, editorials, or other stories that are not news.

2. Do not post news that is more than 12 hours old.

3. Do not post duplicate topics about news events that have already been posted. Please note that we are very strict about duplicates in the Latest Breaking News forum. Multiple discussion threads about the same topic are not permitted. If you would like to share a new article about a news item that is already being discussed, please add it to the thread that is already open on that topic.

4. When posting articles, always use the published title of the article as the title of the discussion thread. Additional information may be included in a thread title (in parentheses) if it helps to make the title more clear.

5. Whenever possible, post excerpts and links from reputable mainstream news sources that are available online. Do not link to blogs, vanity sites, or blatantly biased sources, except in cases where reputable mainstream sources are not available. Please make an effort to link directly to the original source of an article, instead of linking to sites that have re-published someone else's content, or re-packaged someone else's content as their own. The moderators have the authority to decide which websites are appropriate for posting in the Latest Breaking News forum and which are not.

6. Do not post links to polls, petitions, or other action items.

7. Discussion of Israeli/Palestinian issues is not permitted in the Latest Breaking News forum, and instead must be posted in the Israeli/Palestinian Affairs forum. If, however, the news item is primarily about U.S. policy in Israeli/Palestinian affairs, you may post it in the Latest Breaking News forum.

8. Do not post frivolous or off-topic news stories. The moderators of the Latest Breaking News forum have the authority to act as news editors, and may remove news stories that they do not consider appropriate for this forum.

9. All of our other rules for posting apply as well, including copyright rules.

It in no way violates any of the above - it is a legitimate news source, within the designated time period and is not an editorial. (jmho - moderators will do as they will)

6. Also, at the end of the article it indicates his first public screening
is tonight.

I hope his work will become well known. It is news itself.
