Don't watch this video either. Don't even think about it.
In all seriousness, the video was done by a fellow DU'er, "Soup", and she posted it about the same time the video by "europegirl4jfk" was posted. It was an amazing weekend with all this creativity flowering, but the videos and songs kept sinking the way great threads sometimes do.

The video takes a few minutes to load, but it's well worth it. Give it up for "soup".

anti-war video

Felt like I needed to do something constructive, so I made a video from a collection of pictures gathered from the internetS, using the song 'Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)' by Melanie.

I need to give credit and thanks to everyone who kindly shared their pics from Crawford and their beautiful vigil pictures this week. Hope I didn't step on anyone's toes by using them.

This is the first time I've tried anything like this, so please be gentle. Hours and hours poured into this little 3min. 55sec. piece. Unfortunately, the darn file is HUGE (11.54mb), and I'm not sure how to make it smaller, or format it to anything other than a WMV (Windows Movie something or other).

Anyway, for what it's worth - it's here for downloading:

Soup, that was amazing, thank you. Trying to stop blubbering here at work. That child in the bloody blanket in the soldier's arms always gets me.

6. The child in the bloody blanket...
Edited on Mon Aug-29-05 08:32 PM by IndyOp
I didn't get the full impact of that photo until I read in someone's sig line here at DU that the blanket had no pattern to it at all - it was just a beige blanket. At first glance it looks like a red striped blanket with blood - but it isn't, it is all blood.

NOTE: Blanket is solid off white without a pattern - all red is blood.

19. Not only is the injured (dead?) child heartbreaking, but I keep thinking
how on earth are these soldiers going to get over what they've been made to do, and what they've had to see? Even the ones that come home in one piece will be damaged beyond repair. :(

27. This photo is beyond heartbreaking
but it shouldn't be lessened in impact for having become an urban legend.

Look at the stripes and the visible loop. They're too equal in width to not be a pattern, and too much towards the orange range to be blood. You can see the blood soaking through the blanket. It's a different color.

The impact of its truth is powerful enough.

16. That song almost brought me to my knees
saturday while I was cleaning, it was the original, playing on one of the cable channels. You young folks need to be told, all those hippies of the past are still here, and your not alone out there. Peace.

I'm not exactly young (40) but am not familiar with the original.

The version on Soup's video is powerful!

20. Melanie... the long-lost lovely Melanie...
It's her own original; she wrote a lotta great songs no one remembers now, sadly...
God, it's been SOOOOO many years since I've heard that song on the radio; this aspect itself makes it a wonderful find for me personally, as it's always been one of my favorites, though I've never owned a copy...
I'm a tad older than you, and was just a young sprite when it was on the charts; she was also on the Woodstock II album (best thing on it, pretty much)... she goes 'way back, and has been mostly utterly forgotten by the "popular media" of today, along with droves of other brave and talented singer-songwriter giants of that age of revolution such as Donovan, Joni Mitchell, etc...
Oh!!!... I LOVE that song!!! I will be watching this again and again!

Beyond the great taste in music, the whole thing's wonderfully done, soup! VERY moving! Bravo! Bravissimo!

I'm lucky I finally got to watch it. (My computer fought me all the way. Having dial-up totally sucks)

The image of the caskets being slid off the ship was truly sickening. Is this *'s way of trying to hide the US carnage?

23. Wow, good morning.
Thank you Melissa. and thank you all for the kind comments and support. :grouphug:

I'm so drained and heartsick from following the hurricane news, it's hard to make a shift to anything else right now.

Do want to let you all know how much I appreciate this. Thank you.

Eric (DUer Eric J in MN) has put the video on his blog for viewing (thank you again, Eric). Just noticed someone left a strange snarky 'honor the troops' comment. Apparently they don't 'get it'.
http://www.moveleft.com/moveleft_essay_2005_08_23_music_video_of_candle_light_vigils_against_the_iraq_war.asp

DUer BPilgrim has graciously added it to the collection on his site, and has offered to format it into something other than the WMV so it won't be so bulky. (I just need to get busy getting him the info he needs to be able to do that - I'm such a slacker, sorry) :
http://news.globalfreepress.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=search&type=full&search=lay+down

Berserker- I have no clue about cookies. Does it have something to do with the site the file was uploaded to? Used it because it was free (and easy).

Bonito- I feel the same way about the song. It's so pure in it's simplicity and the chorus with the Edwin Hawkins Singers gives me chills. We are one world. We do bleed inside each other's wounds. The grief of one mother is the grief of every mother. The loss of one is a loss to all. The hope of one is the hope of all.

Thank you all again. Love ya.

25. Hi soup! :-)
Thanks for the kind words about my video. As I stated in the other thread, yours made me cry too. This song is just so beautiful! I've never heard it before. And the pictures are heart-wrenching.

I checked BPilgrim's site with all these beautiful photos etc. from Camp Casey. Do you think he would probably agree to host my video as well? I couldn't upload it to my own site because I didn't have the bandwidth and it isn't a political site but just my personal one.
