Lots about Mississippi. Hiway 90 bridges are gone. Deaths from Point Cadet
http://eyesonkatrina.blogspot.com/

Grand Casino Biloxi washed across U.S. 90 to the west. Treasure Bay’s pirate ship was beached. At least three other casinos were out of commission, Holloway said.

Beau Rivage still stood, while Hard Rock Casino, scheduled to open in early September, suffered 50 percent damages. The signature guitar, said to be the world’s largest, still stood.

“Highway 90 is destroyed, “ said Biloxi Mayor A.J. Holloway. . “It’s something like I’ve never seen before. I saw a disaster. Water did not get this high for Camille.”

Most of the residents who lost their lives were on Point Cadet, at the southeastern tip of Biloxi’s peninsula.

13. Sounds like a lot of extensive damage to them. They survived Camille
So some of them may have survived this, too. The ones that survived Camille, at least on the west end of the beach, are up on bluffs, so maybe some survived. They are talking about total destruction in some regions, though. the town of Long Beach has lost its harbor (which housed a lot of shrimp boats and working boats) and the first couple of blocks of the town.

Some good friends of mine live just a few blocks inland. Others live in other parts of the region that have been reported to be in trouble. One of my high schools was in Pass Christian, just a mile inland. The other three schools I attended have all been reported as heavily damaged. I haven't heard from my parents or my two nieces or my sister or brother yet. My sister lives in a trailer. My parents and brother and probably one of my nieces (I have a strange family history) are all in a weakly constructed house, but at least they are seven to ten miles inland.

I'm stressed, and rambling, and have little hope of sleeping tonight. My favorite city is underwater, my home town is destroyed, my family and many friends are out of contact, and certainly enduring hardships, at the very least.

I'm not even sure how this will affect my novel. Three fourths of it takes place in New Orleans and Mississippi. Does their destruction make it easier or harder to sell? Weird thing to worry about, I know, but I do, anyway.

4. WTF is happening. Why isn't the MSM reporting on Northshore?
Why the hell are there no reports from Slidell/Lacombe/St. Tammany/Covington/Mandeville?

The I-10 bridge from Slidell is GONE. And what the fuck is * doing? He's on fucking vacation. Goddamn him to hell.

11. Because nobody can get to these regions
This isn't playtime. This is the real deal. The bridges into Mississippi are gone. The bridges into Slidell are gone. The highways in many places are gone. The roads that haven't been destroyed are blocked by trees and debris and boats and live power lines. There are gas lines under the water that are flaming through the water. There is no power, and there is no hope of power for the next few weeks. There are no phone lines. Cell phones don't work. Even planes and helicopters have to be able to land. Local stations are covering their local regions, and the nationals don't have helicopters in their yet. They can't use the airport, they can't be sure of where to refuel. It's back to the stone age for a while.

They are getting some stories on the north shore, but not a lot. Mostly they are showing some flooding, a lot of wind damage, and that's all.

The MSM was set up in New Orleans, and the station there is big enough to have generators that can run everything. Many of these outlying towns don't. They can only report what they see. A lot of these stories are popping up in the MSM a little bit after they pop up on blogs and locals. The MSM is trying to confirm stories, trying to make sure they aren't spreading rumors that haven't been confirmed, etc.

This is extreme. This is unprecedented destruction. Give them a chance to figure it out. Our on-demand world is interrupted.

As for Bush, he's been in contact with the NO mayor, it sounds like. He's doing what he can. He just has strong limitations--like stupidity and an inability to organize, plan, or get things done.

15. Thank you for the info. Sorry I'm so upset. I am so worried.
Mr CottonBear & I have very little immediate family. His is all in St. Tammany Parrish except for his daughter and his neice and her family.

Thanks for the report. I work in civil engineering. Your report is devastating. This is beyond catastrophic. I'm feeling the rain and winds here in Athens, GA right now. I am so glad to not live near the coast.

May God have mercy on the survivors.

6. This is so horrible
My dad is a civil engineer at TVA and got a call last night that power lines are down in Mississippi. :( I'm sure things are getting bad there too. We're supposed to get some more rain and possible tornado's (I'm in the southeastern side in Tennessee).

7. blog post from NO
Hurricane Katrina kicked my town's ass.
For those who know I live in the New Orleans area and may have been worried, my family and I escaped Sunday morning, more than 24 hours before landfall.

I'm not sure when we'll be able to get back in. I've heard one week from one person and several weeks from another. There's a lot of chitchat. I think just about everyone staying at this Motel 6 is from the New Orleans area.

If you've seen any of the footage, the shot of the man being airlifted off of a rooftop by the Coast Guard is from the Lower Ninth Ward where one of the levees broke. That's within the New Orleans city limits, but it is to the far east of the city, and I live about five minutes west of the city. If you've seen the shot of the mall, that's at the intersection of Veterans and Clearview, just off of I-10. The giant Target sign is gone along with most of the roof of the mall. I've heard that a levee broke on the Harvey Canal, which is close to my neighborhood, but we think it was on the other side of the canal from where we live.

http://www.livejournal.com/users/norseblue/466527.html

Our house is probably full of water, and I'm sure we have no power. I don't know what's going to happen now. But we're okay, and I'm calling FEMA tomorrow. I'm gonna see what Red Cross can do for us, too.

It's really surreal. You see the Red Cross and similar NGOs go out to disaster sites on TV, but you never imagine you'll ever need their help.

8. All of this
must be what hell is like and short from what happened to Atlantis. I'm thankful every day I live where I live at where we don't have to worry about flooding like that, snow storms, tornado's etc. We get some effects but just mostly rain and the like. And has Bush even responded to this?

12. I'm so glad you're OK. Please pray for Mr. CottonBear's family in
Lacombe and Slidell if you are so inclined. I'm sending prayers to you and all Duers in the path of the storm. We haven't heard from them since this AM. They decided to ride out the storm in their houses in Lacombe. :scared:

9. another blog post
Hurricane Katrina

I posted some pictures of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina at Flickr.

The eye passed directly over where my parents live. Theyre safe and sound in Alexandria, which is located in North Louisiana, and my Aunt Jackies cousins house. They opened up the house to 32 other people and were interviewed on the local news there.

Miles OBriens stupid hurricane blog is no longer on the CNN home page. It was so lame that I actually complained. It doesnt look like hes even updating it anymore.

MSNBC has some spectacular photos on their site.

Here some some tidbits from the news Ive gathered:

Jefferson Parishs Chief Administrative Assistant Tim Whitmer said the damage from Hurricane Katrina was almost equally split between the east bank and the West Bank. We have widespread devastation in the parish, he said.

At the Danny and Clydes at Bellemeade and Belle Chasse Highway, half of the store was gone, he said. We believe that may have been a tornado.

Volunteer firefighters on the West Bank helped rescue about 300 people during the day.

Sections of the Interstate 10 twin bridges linking St. Tammany and Orleans parishes over Lake Pontchartrain have been severely damaged' in both directions, some probably knocked out, Louisianas highway boss said. Probably several dozen segments of the bridges are either missing or shoved aside, said Mark Lambert, a spokesman for the Department of Transportation and Development. The damage appears to be random along the bridges and affects both the eastbound and westbound sides. The span is so jagged it looks like stairs, Lambert said.

917,000 households were without power in 23 south Louisiana parishes.

In a city famous for its food, there arent many restaurants more beloved than Antoines, known the world over for its oysters Rockefeller. But the culinary institution couldnt escape the cruel whims of Hurricane Katrina, which swept away one of its fourth-floor walls, exposing tables and chairs to the world outside.

ABC 13 in Houston just had LIVE coverage with Wayne Dolcefino in Slidell. They showed the boat that is on the I-10, and he mentioned an overpass on the I-10 twin span that has shifted 4 feet. The area between the lake and Old Spanish Trail is a large flood plain with water up to 6ft deep in some area. The Home Depot on Airport Rd. took in 6ft of water.

Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Mike Brown called Katrina one of the worst disasters he has seen, exceeded only by California wildfires. This is a catastrophic storm, he said. People will not get back to their homes for several weeks if not longer.

New Orleans is experiencing widespread looting across the city.

Katrina Aftermath 8/29 PM
Filed under: new orleans Maitri @ 10:51 pm

Residents of New Orleans East homes remain trapped in their flooded homes as rescue workers struggle to pull them out. Floating corpses and the screaming trapped - please continue to pray for our city.

Windows blown out of Dominion (energy company) building downtown (Nola.com gallery)

Those with 504 numbers still cannot be reached or reach one another, and evacuees have been ordered to stay away from NO for at least a week. The most comprehensive summary on Katrina aftermath to date is available here. Of interest:

Hurricane Katrina plowed into this below-sea-level city Monday morning, ripping holes in the roof of the Superdome, blasting out high-rise windows, knocking out power citywide, and leaving residents of flooded neighborhoods in their attics and on rooftops awaiting rescue.

Ebbert said it could be two months before electricity is restored to all of the city.

High winds have damaged parts of Uptown New Orleans, including the Napolean Avenue area, the location of Memorial Medical Center.

Evacuees, stay safe and do not attempt to return any time soon.
