Full report from the mayor. There are bodies floating in the water. A oil barge is grounded and leaking oil. He gives a full update.

Oil spilling into a city that is 80% underwater.

I don't think he gives a flying fuck about the oil.

Edit... he's trying to prevent the entire city from being under a massive coat of oil -- which will become more likely if a spill continues. Its not about save the oil, its about save the city.

3. THe problem isn't necessarily even the oil
Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 12:32 AM by fujiyama
It's the oil from the refineries and other chemicals contaminating the water.

Though I will agree the media's focus is on the oil...OMG! Gas prices will rise. That certainly shouldn't be the biggest concern when we have people missing.

28. BR
But the vast majority of chemical, refinery and other toxic industries are concentrated about 50 miles upriver in and around Baton Rouge. Any news as to what's happening there?

7. He is worried about contamination
He outlines everything and it almost seems an impossible task. This is going to take months and months to even make a dent.

19. No problem
I have been glued to this since yesterday and from watching the news you would have thought all was well. I am still not over going through three hurricanes last year. The mayors report just gutted me.

after all these years one would think i'd be inured to this by now and believe any ludicrous thing said about them. fundraising and cutting cake... wow. just wow. the parallels to the saying, "nero and his fiddle" are striking.

36. It's another "My Pet Goat" response - I thought McCain was a more savvy
politician than that. Looks like he wants to suck up to the GOP donors more than he wants to put on a "caring" face for the hurricane victiims.

As for the blivet**, he really doesn't have a clue of what normal emotions are unless he has someone whispering in his ear with a script. These photos - there's another one that's even better - need to be preserved and remembered. THIS is what he is really like.

38. If Clinton was president ...

If Clinton was president, he would have cancelled all his personal appointments and TOOK CHARGE. Cut through the beauracratic BS and made sure that they had as many boots on the ground there ASAP.

In fact, Clinton would have had boots nearby and ready to deploy once things cleared.

Who wants to bet that Clinton makes it to New Orleans before the GW Bush (who is still on vacation).

Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 01:35 AM by Garbo 2004
reach it anymore. Water rising fast and they are considering evacuating. Would have to be by air. They were told by LA state police that two block long breach in 17th Street Canal levee is dumping water from the Lake into Orleans parish. (I don't know the geography but that's what the hospital rep said on CNN.)

She also said Charity Hospital being evacuated by air.

31. And this disaster was "dodging the bullet"
Some posters on DU were whining about how this was no big deal.

55 already confirmed dead in Biloxi. 80% of NO is under water.

And this was "dodging the bullet".

If you ask me, the media did not sensationalize this particular disaster enough. The potential for loss of life had KAtrina maintained strength and hit NO head on would have been devestating. We would already be talking of the dead in the thousands as, IMO, the Superdome could not have withstood a direct hit of a Cat 5.

Get the media whores off the boats and start rescuing PEOPLE!! I could not believe what I was hearing last night. They have the media crew on boats so they can get their blood lust shots. They can hear people that are stuck INSIDE their attics and they have to just sail on by. Where are the boats!! :grr:

37. If the Storm Surge topped the levee ...

If the Storm Surge had topped and breached the levees, pretty much everyone left in New Orleans would have drowned. The bowl is filling right now. If the storm surge was high enough, the bowl would have been filled in 10 minutes.
