3. There needs to be a third choice:
I fully realize the need for vigilant property protection by law enforcement in such times as these in which entire areas are on the brink of anarchy but I am DISGUSTED by the self-righteousness and pretentiousness of those who look down at the disempowered and disaffected among us and so zealously judge them.

It is similar to my feelings on war. For example, if I were alive at the time I would have fully supported the United States' war against Japan but I would be in total DISGUST and OPPOSITION to the demonization and villifying of the Japanese. Law enforcement and defensive war are very similar in my view. While both are necessary, neither should be taken up with zealous self-righteousness but rather with humility and the constant mindfulness of the tragedy that both are necessary.

9. well said-
i mostly agree. The word 'ruthless' is pretty 'out-there'- do they mean they'd KILL over 'things'???- got to draw the line there myself- it's stuff- mostly waterlogged stuff....- not a life. IT is replaceable.

But i agree there need to be some help getting folks to focus, and find some sanity and 'control'- I can only imagine what they are going through- and my imagining is not very 'up-beat'.

The fact they even call it looting is preposterous. Taking food from Winn-Dixie before the refrigerators go down completely?

(I'm not being nasty, but GEEZ.... their priorities are for food that WILL spoil, while hungry people starve during a disaster?)

19. I'm not sure
We talked once this afternoon and then once this evening.
She said it was soooo hot. The kids had pitched a tent in the yard because the house was too hot.
she was lying in the bed of the truck with a mattress.
Both times we talked, the reception really sucked and we were cut off at about 7-8 minutes.
I'll talk to her tomorrow hopefully and I will ask her.

49. This isn't harsh -- there's a good reason for this
The streets are very dangerous after a hurricane -- rubble, wires, trees, etc., and also the streets need to be clear for EMTs, power companies, people bringing food/water/ice, etc. It's for everyone's safety, and it allows the NG and other disaster relief people to do what they need to do.

I just saw people "looting" toilet paper from a store. This is a matter of survival and if it were my store, and I was not there, I would hope that my stock was being used. Even the liquor and smokes.

If people are looting televisions, then someone should smack them upside the head and help them to prioritize. Not shoot them.

Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 11:37 AM by TahitiNut
Maybe there's something about having a 'puter and internet access that makes it highly improbable that folks would comprehend what it'd be like to live in grinding, back-breaking, oppressive poverty day after day and year after year, no matter what you do - when you can even muster up the energy to make yet another try at the "good life" that you see on the other side of the tracks.

We hear a Repuke Governor strutting yet again about killing folks, yet he wallows in the cronyism of tax cheats, war profiteers, and stock fraud millionaires. "Don't look behind that curtain!" In the same breath he scrambles to applaud Smirk for a "response" that has yet to appear as a single boot-on-the-ground.

I'd be willing to bet that the insurance claims for theft and vandalism exceed the actuals by at least an order of magnitude. Which is the greater theft?

24. I have very clear feelings about this
Taking stuff to survive? Totally justifiable if you pay for it whenever you can. This could be done with an anonymous money order or something like that when you are on your feet again.

Taking jewelry and shit? Throw the BOOK at them. It's wrong and I don't care about the circumstances.

There is a distinction that should be made between people who are looting for nothing more than personal gain and selfishness and people who, for example, take food supplies from a store for day to day survival.

I've seen video of a hispanic man arguing with a guardsman (FL, after Andrew) who wouldn't let him go into a trashed supermarket - the man was looking for formula for his baby. The guy just lost everything, his baby was starving, but taking a can of formula was looting.

38. There is plenty of outrage here from me
I believe in the death penalty for white collar corporate crimes, and yet when I say that the anti-death penalty hug-a-thug crowd goes all into a conniption.

But none of that excuses looting of non-emergency, non-survival items: TV's, jewelery, etc. Those people should just be shot on sight, and disposed of, so that the authorities can deal with saving lives and protecting the innocent.

How disgusting! They leave these people out in the cold, and then when they try to get some products of survival and a few things of actual luxury (something they have little of in their lives), they threaten them with summary execution? :puke:

Notice how A LARGE part of those left behind are (wait for it...) black. Funny how the richer people get out fine and expect those who are subjected to nature to take it and nothing else.

If someone leads a life of poverty, and then is left by their government and the richer to a terrible proposition of facing a hurricane with no support; I have NO problem with them taking products of both survival and luxury from those who didn't lend them a hand, before or during the storm; not to mention being part of the entity which has kept those people deprived and desperate for so long.

47. He's just appealing to his base
The kind of people who could sit in their comfy homes fully stocked and watch the suffering on tv and froth at the mouth about those evil looters. The kind of people who view everything in black and white, and don't have an empathetic bone in their bodies. The kind of people who can overlook the fact that this city has been crushed, that people are scrambling for their very lives, bodies are floating in the water, and focus on looters. The looters! The looters!!!!

Honestly. Who really gives a flying fuck about looters right now? No one with an ounce of understanding of the magnitude of suffering and destruction. Some are too wrapped up in black and white the law is the law viewpoint to actually attempt to think about what it might be like to be in New Orleans at this moment.

and then food in many cases.

poverty is the only crime and that crime is really a symptom of the disease we call "Wealth"

let's keep our attentions on the colossal bandits with a laser like focus.

64. I am 100% sure the good Governor had a hard-on while saying that.
With a, say, 20% probability that he creamed his pants right then and there.

68. another depressing DU poll... the M$MWs programming is very powerful
more than 1/2 of responders to my Hiroshima poll thought it was right to NUKE civilians of a state that was defeated and suing for peace :puke:

72. That's because your previous poll....
...was based on revisionist history and was argued to death.

73. Looting should not be their top priority at this point.
Let's get people safe first. Then we can worry about 'stuff'.

74. Looting my not be right
but i know officials have MUCH better things to worry about. :grr: Why are they wasting time keeping people from taking things that will be pitched anyway. Whether these people need the stuff or not. The companies will write it off as damaged goods anyway. :grr:

80. I saw something fairly refreshing on the evening news.
It showed some of the cops and what they were doing. They appeared not to be overly harsh and were basically just making the ones who had non essential items drop them. They seemed to be letting the folks who were taking food, water, and medical supplies go about their buisness. It actually showed where they were actually "looting" a store(s) and sending it to neighbourhoods that were to flooded for people to get around.

I hope this is a general practice, and not just a minimalization of whats really going on.

Also i must give a big hollar to my local NBC affiliate. They only showed folks who were taking water and food, and did not even touch the word "looting" in the broadcast. They only mentioned people were mostly stealing essentials for survival.
