Mass. Guv gets testy when asked about his sons not serving in Iraq
Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 09:00 AM by AllyCat
Mitt backs war, but his boys are safe at home

Gov. Mitt Romney, who has comforted the grieving loved ones of soldiers killed in Iraq and promoted National Guard recruitment, yesterday said he has not urged his own sons to enlist - and isn't sure whether they would.

The Herald posed the question as Romney - a potential 2008 White House contender and backer of President Bush's Iraq policy -was honored by the Massachusetts National Guard after he signed a bill extending pay for state workers on active duty.

``No, I have not urged my own children to enlist.I don't know the status of my childrens' potentially enlisting in the Guard and Reserve,`` Romney said, his voice tinged with anger.

Massachusetts residents can enlist in the National Guard up to age 39. Romney's five sons range in age from 24 to 35. Neither the Romney children nor the governor have served in the military, Romney spokeswoman Julie Teer said.

1. He Really Ought To Get Those Boys In The Army, Ma'am
These people seem determined to reproduce a feudal society, but they miss one essential aspect of it: the old aristocrats did their own fighting. The nobility was found on the battlefield, sword in hand, when it decided a thing was worth fighting over. It was the nearest thing to a saving grace that system had....

7. During the crusades many an aristocratic knight lost life and fortune
fighting to liberate the holy land from "infidels". I think their cause stank, but at least they weren't hypocrites.

And go down the list of republicans, one by one, and ask them about this.

I would really love to see the talking points they devise for that situation.

Anyone want to join me in this effort? Wouldn't be that hard--just a list of republicans in office, a little research. Could put up a Web site.

4. Hmmm.... sounds like an interesting project
I couldn't start on this until mid-September. Once we compile our list, how do we get the media to cover it?

It would be good to find out the Democrats who have served and/or have children serving in Iraq or elsewhere and make sure they get asked this question too...just to prove our point.

Oh, duh, you said start up a website. Well, we could get the media to cover the website then. I'd be up for this project. It can be an adjunct to putting enlistment papers under the wipers of cars with pro-Bush* stickers (my current project).

3. Republicans hate that question.
Because it exposes their hypocrisy and cowardice. That's why I keep asking it.

5. Oh yes
I love it when they get fiesty and angry about something so simple. It shows the true hypocriacy.

8. When I first read your thread title, I thought the sons were serving,
and I was kind of thrown off until I read the post.

Yeah, I'll bet that hypocrite, Romney, doesn't know his kids status as far as they're possible enlisting in the Guard or the Reserve. Just another chickenhawk.
