2. i find it amazing how any little threat can send
gas soaring.. but it never goes down, even after the threat surpasses.. it just waits till the next "crisis" or excuse and then goes up again on top of the extra cost that was added for a crisis that never happened.. it is ridiculous, criminal..

6. I was taking to my mechanic a week ago...
He manages a Sinclair station that is situated across the street from a Conoco station. He told me one day recently he saw them change the price for gasoline three times in one day (all increases). When they do, he tries to keep his at the same price for a couple of hours, till the owner calls him and tells him to raise his price (the owner lives nearby and will drive around to compare prices. When she sees the other stations raise their prices, she does the same).

Incidentally, he told me he makes about 3 cents for every gallon of gas he sells. I guess the rest, excluding taxes, goes to the oil companies and all the middlemen.

4. Gas prices were already needlessly high. Katrina will be used to
justify the previous gouging and to hike up prices even more. We can't blame it on the Arabs and OPEC. They say there is plenty of oil and they too are concerned about the high prices when they see no need for it.

<snip>

Katrina forced the evacuation of 711 oil and natural-gas rigs and platforms in the Gulf of Mexico, according to the Minerals Management Service.

The evacuations halted the movement of more than 1.3 million barrels a day of oil production, or 92% of the region's regular output.

Daily natural-gas production dropped by 8.3 billion cubic feet of gas, or 83% of production in the Gulf.

7. I wonder if states with laws against gouging during
a crisis could put the brakes on this juggernaut. The oil companies aren't exactly suffering in the profit area. During the 93 flood, our state attorney really came out hard against businesses trying to profit. If it were a joint effort between states maybe that mechanism could be used to temper the market a bit.
