Too feminine? Bash gays
Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 09:06 AM by RoBear
title in Advocate September 13 page 21; similar piece on line August 04.

Study: Masculinity linked to homophobia

They told guys (after a "gender identity survey") that they had a feminine identity, then interviewed them about "political opinions, car preferences, and feelings toward gay people...men who were told they were feminine gave much more homophobic responses. They were also more likely to support the war in Iraq and to be interested in buying an SUV."

WHY AM I NOT SURPRISED???

Interestingly, "Women's responses were unchanged by the masculine-feminine rating."

{edited for "fat finger syndrome" in subject line}

3. {whisper}
thank you. Screwed up just as I was posting and didn't have a chance to proof and was appalled when I finally got back in and saw the error. How mortifying! And I'm a former English teacher. Thanks for the heads-up!

had to sleep together. They got too comfy and woke up revolted and started talking football and other He-Man stuff.

Give them boys a big ole gas guzzler and a bombing campaign and watch their chests swell. Stupid F*ckers!

4. Why is the average man so insecure regarding his own
sexuality? Why are they so afraid of the sexuality of others? I have never understood this? You can't just say it is because "society" is so oppressive to gays in general; because it is the very twisted sexual self-concept that most men have that is the cause of "society's" oppression of gays, in the first place. Also, it would seem to be counter intuitive on an individual, evolutionary level for men to hate homosexuals; since homosexual men are not in competition for females. Anyway, I get so fucking tired of sexually retarded men making the world a worse place for everyone for no goddamned reason! Sorry, the screed got away from me...

6. I have had many a straight guy jealous of my relationship
with their girlfriend EVEN THOUGH they knew there was no sexual competition. perhaps they resented the emotional bond that they could never attain that can occur, often more intensely, when the underlying motive isn't sexual conquest. this is with the more homophobic guys, not the straight guys who were comfortable with their own and others diverse orientations. I have met waaay too many straight guys cool with everything to make a blanket statement. :shrug:

8. I think you could edit that to say the "average American man."
Most of my European and Latin American straight male friends don't have this problem. They are very comfortable with themselves and always give me a kiss on the cheek when we greet and part. I am not sure why, but it seems most male homophobia is indigenous to the United States. There are most likely lots of variables which play a part in that.

9. I'm starting to believe feminine = death in minds of many
People would actually die or kill rather than be accused of being feminine.

I believe this is because of the global devaluation of feminine qualities over centuries.

The tragedy is it's being reinforced by our culture, our religions, our leaders -

This is what Kowaanisqatsi - life out of balance - is all about.
