9. A woman in Mississippi was on saying she should have left because |
|
she ended up putting her kids and grandkids in danger because they wouldn't leave without her.
She was sorry and it looked like they all survived.
This isn't a surprise and I'm sure people now regret their decisions. It doesn't mean they deserve to die. It is all heartbreaking.

2. This might be good. In case of another hurricane |
|
people will be more apt to leave like they should. After Camille people were better about evacuating.

Either they glorify the people who are the "when it's your time, it's your time" types and portray them as some kind of rugged heroes, or they lay the blame for being in the wrong place at the wrong time on people who are victims.
They never seem to mention that some people could not leave. I saw a photo today of two people helping a man with an amputated leg leave his home. I guess he should have just hopped along several hundred miles out of the storm's path according to these news reporters?

12. Indeed there are the stories of those who couldn't get out... |
|
but there are many more of people who were bullheaded about the hurricane and intentionally placed themselves in harms way. These are the people they should focus on to educate the rest of us on what happens when you don't heed the warnings.

|
:sarcasm:.. Last night they apparently still had he "interviewing" storm survivors..telling their "stories"..(I changed the channel)
I guess natalee is really dead this time.. A bigger "story" finally will overwhelm the voyeurs and bring them back to the US.

6. GOOD. Blast that message 24/7. Not enough people got it before |
|
How many millions are we spending on rescues rather than recovery and clean up? How many people are dead now because they didn't leave?
How many people who wanted to evacuate weren't able to because resources were tied up on all those who chose to stay?
Sometimes the media gets it right.

7. It will be Blame the Victim |
|
in the New Orleans stories because they will need to shift the focus from the fact that Bush is AWOL as usual. Also the Bush administration won't be throwing money at people in New Orleans the way they did in Florida when a hurricane hit just before an election.

10. well it's the media's fault people were so desensitized in the first place |
|
They made every storm the big one, and when the big one came, people didn't listen.

14. I disagree with that characterization |
|
The media does hype up storms, but all hurricanes should be taken seriously and people should leave if they are able to leave.

11. I think in the long run, it is very good to show this type of remorse |
|
People think they are invincible. Or worse, they have the "I've seen it all" attitude, and erroneously think that they are smart enough to outsmart a strong Cat 4 hurricane. Indeed, some of these people probably did just fine and will put themselves in harms way again because of it.
I hope the MSM shows many of these people who had to knock holes in their attics to get their families on the roofs of their houses to safety. It will hopefully discourage at least one other person or family from trying to stick it out in the future.

18. "People think they are invincible." |
|
Think how it would have been, if it had been a Cat 5, like it had been just hours before it made landfall and it HAD been a direct hit. I think NO would have been the scene of thousands of dead instead of hundreds. As bad as it was, those folks that made it are lucky, because it could have been even worse. Had that storm been a Cat 5 the tidal surge would have probably had been 30 feet instead of 20. Instead of the water trickling in, like it has since yesterday, it would have rushed inland and gone over the top of the levees and the people who stayed in NO would probably all have been killed. If the storm had zigged to the left instead of to the right, it would have been an unimaginable disaster.

17. Good. They should show everyone who left that they made a wise choice |
|
Those who stay and then are in harms way want help. This places everyone in danger. Where I live we live under the threat of a tornado. You get a little warning but not much. They had days and days to get out and everyone was telling them to do it. Those who don't heed the warning...so be it!
