Looting and Torture : Stacking the Deck

We've all heard a certain kind of argument in favor of using Torture on Terrorists. It starts with "suppose there's a nuclear bomb somewhere in this city" and ends with "the only way to stop it is torture." But of course this cunningly contrived scenario doesn't bear very much (if any) resemblance to most cases in which torture is used.

And we've all heard a certain kind of argument in favor (or, to be more precise, excusing) looting. It starts with "A father or mother has young kids" and ends with "this is the only way to feed them." Again does this particular scenario describe most looters? Evidence would seem to suggest no.

Just something to think about. Oh, and lest anybody be concerned, looting is not nearly as bad as torturing.
