19. According to CNN
A lot of the gasoline floating on the floodwaters is on fire, and there are other fires around town (one in the central part of this picture). I think a lot of the haze is probably actually smoke. :-(

What plans are in place to save them?

24. Talking about an evacuation of any kind in Wisconsin with fiance
The first thing we said we'd grab besides each other before fleeing was the three cats. How could someone leave their companion behind like that? I don't understand it. Of course, it's possible the owner perished or is incapacitated by the storm and this was the best the poor dog could do. He looks so sad and scared.

30. They may also have had kids.
I hate to say it, because just thinking about it breaks my heart, but my first priority would be getting my kids out of there. If that meant leaving my cat behind, I would.   I would do everything I possibly could to make sure it never came to that, but I can't blame anyone who made that choice. Most shelters don't allow pets.

although I can't remember the name of it, that goes in to affected areas and their only job is to rescue animals. I saw the woman discuss the situation before the enormity of it became clear. She had just returned to the U.S. from another rescue and was headed to the area asap.

As for the animals question up the thread, I think they need to concentrate on saving the humans. If they're having to evacuate the superdrome, and with so much NG personnel and equipment in Iraq, I doubt pets are even a priority.

Sent a couple of truckloads of cats & dogs to Houston before the storm. They are now at the Houston SPCA, awaiting adoption.

My elderly indoor kitties don't need a roommate, but the SPCA is accepting donations of food or money to care for the 260 new animals.

Honestly, I doubt if we really need material or personnel aid from overseas. We have the resources to deal with crises like this -in fact I bet we are vastly better equipped to deal with it than any other country on the planet. The problem is having the will/integrity/morality/honesty (call it what you will) to do what is needed.

the *mosquitoes* will be ridiculous.
Not to mention the water moccasin's and alligator's.
My mom tells me someone ran into a 3' shark in the streets already.

The really bad smell won't start until the water recedes and the rotting starts, but yea, the heat index is gonna be awful for a while.
No utilities to speak of until the get the levee patched and the water pumped out.

I hope FEMA has enough forms for these folks to fill out.

47. I've been thinking about that.
The aftermath of a hurricane is almost always worse than the actual storm as far as human comfort. Riding out the storm is nerve wracking, evacuating is annoying and also anxiety-ridden, but dealing with the days, weeks and months to come takes a far greater toll on physical, psychological and spiritual human needs.

The pounding sun, sauna-like heat and humidity, insects, poor sanitation, etc. take a tremendous physical toll on the survivors.

This was a known issue and nothing had been done to address it.

I might feel simply sad if I thought that New Orleans was destroyed the despite the best efforts of government to protect it. That is not what happened.

I'm as frustrated as you. I just think it's a conversation that can be held after rescue and recovery has been conducted. Although it could possibly have been prevented (the degree of devastation, not the catastrophe itself), we must handle what we've been dealt.

Again, I'm sorry. I regreted my response when I posted.
