Poll question: Should the authorities allow a free-for-all in New Orleans? |
|
I can see both sides of this.
On the one hand, the situation looks like it's getting so bad that it might be a good idea to go into "salvage anything you can, yours or otherwise, and get the hell out" mode, at which point anything that can be salvaged is a good thing for society, no matter who claims ownership.
On the other hand, that's an extremely desperate approach. I don't think that it's the best way to do things if the plan is to save New Orleans. Doing things that way doesn't leave much room for the order that it takes to work efficiently and with focus.
What do you think?

3. I think of it more as an anarchy vs. lawful order thread. |

The poll is very focused on practicality, actually.

Other than the few film clips purporting to show "looters", there is no free-for-all happening in New Orleans. The main focus is saving the tens of thousand of people trapped on their roofs and stranded in poorly-accessable areas.
Property can be replaced -- most of it, anyway. But if those people can't be reached within 48 hours, we'll have a massive human disaster to cope with as dehydration, heat stroke, hunger, insect bites and waterborne illnesses start to get to the survivors waiting for help.
