FAA opens runway in New Orleans
So, my question is - why don't they start flying people out of NO? Why?

Tuesday, August 30, 2005; Posted: 3:52 p.m. EDT (19:52 GMT)

(CNN) -- Officials opened one runway at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in Louisiana on Tuesday to emergency flights for Katrina relief, according to a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

"Runway 19 opened for emergency services at about 1:10 p.m. Central," said Roland Herwig, an FAA spokesman for the southwest region that includes Louisiana.

Emergency flights will operate only during daylight, Herwig said.

All airports in the New Orleans area were closed to commercial service Tuesday and also may be closed Wednesday.

1. They have to get them there, for one thing
Then, where will the planes come from?

Where will the people go?

How to handle those with medical conditions?

etc.

etc.

RIGHT?????

Or didnt you read my reply........

To many emotions at the DU today are running ahead of putting any thought to your concerns......I dont want Bush in the area for at least a week...either by air or on ground.....workers need to do their work...saving people is more important than giving the CHIMP an opportunity for a PhotoOp.

6. Oh, I read your reply
And I don't want to get into a flame war with you. Don't know where you live or have lived. But I do "have a clue" as I was went thru Hurricane Andrew here in South Florida. Your subject line was insulting, to say the least.

I don't care what Shrub does or doesn't do, I'm much more concerned about the people in N.O. and want them out of there as quickly as possible, before the flooding gets any worse.

Katrina was here before it hit LA, MS, and AL. The people there are hot (like way bloody hot - I was without power for 51 hours and let me tell you, it was verging on unbearable - 90+ degrees heat plus humidity makes for heat indexes in the 100's,) without food or water or shelter and the communications system is down.

There's a runway open - they're operating on generators. If the Federal government wanted those people out of there, if they gave a shit, they could make it happen.

I understand the logistics are difficult. The planes can come from commercial airlines that the taxpayers bailed out after September 11th, 2001. They could go to functioning airports with access to functioning medical facilities.

So you see, I have thought about this. Perhaps it's a utopian view, but I care about the people trapped in New Orleans and want them to be safe.

7. Why Is The Government Responsible???

"There's a runway open - they're operating on generators. If the Federal government wanted those people out of there, if they gave a shit, they could make it happen."

The government I think is doing its best under the circumstances...temporary shelters are in the process of going up as I type...this situation I think is going to kill this countries economy being as though we are spending millions of $$ a day in Iraq.

"The planes can come from commercial airlines that the taxpayers bailed out after September 11th, 2001"

Sorry that wasnt part of the deal anyhow the Airlines are not under any obligation nor does the government have any legal ability to use commercial ailiners for this purpose, perhaps you should call the airlines yourself and ask them.....it does not fall under the Civil Air Reserve act.Also.

"but I care about the people trapped in New Orleans and want them to be safe."

Its all in whatever kind of power you belive in hands....
