5. following up on my own post: shooter was injured too.
If my memory serves me correctly,

Same station I cited earlier (I was tuned in to it all day) iv'd a cop who said that the downed officer's partner called for backup and 2 difft dept's responded immediately and so did an ambulance. the looter/shooter was shot in the leg and is also in medical care, not critically injured. Several people were looting and the cops were intervening and had a couple of people in custody when the shooting occurred.

He said that they were not going outside anymore after being shot at by looters.

I'm sure that they were just friendly looters, though. Probably all kinds of nice people out looking for food and diapers. And oh yeah, shooting at reporters. :eyes:

61. I have memories of growing up in New York City
during the sixties, and one night there was a massive blackout.

I remember the whole neighborhood seemingly standing around talking to each other in the middle of the street. We all had radios and the news was bad. There was arson and looting in many parts of the city.

Yet nothing happened in my neighborhood.

I ended up swimming in a neighbor's pool to keep cool. We made a great whirlpool.

I wasn't thinking to look to see why all the men were talking together in the street. Were they defending the neighborhood or just chatting to pass the time? I never even thought of it until now, but anyway, it's an interesting social phenomenon why some neighborhoods will have cooperation and peace and others just a mile away will have arson and looting.

It may show how fragile society really is, or it may show just how influential a very few criminals can be on an environment.

Who knows.

you mentioned they might be in shock - maybe that can be the defense - I think it would be right up there with the candy bar defense. But we're all entitled to our opinion I'm just saying the shock excuse isn't cutting it for me.

48. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
is not a "candy bar" defense. It's documented, and it's real.

Frankly, I don't care if the excuse cuts it for you or not. It does "cut it" for the psychiatric and legal communities.

Furthermore, I was not trying to make excuses. I have no idea what that person was going through. Could be a case of PTSD, could be an jackass with a gun and homicidal tendencies. My point is that NOBODY posting on this board could possibly know and therefore, judging is pointless and potentially harmful.

You do not have CLUE ONE what that person has gone through in the last 48 hours. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is highly documented and very real.

No, I don't know if this particular person is suffering from PTSD. Could be that they're just a homicidal asshole. My point was that we don't know enough to judge.

Whether he was a maniac, or had just reason to do it under his circumstances.

That goes for an actual answer to any of this.....What I do see though that is very clear, is that the city has been put under martial law. And I really don't think the violence is going to help, I think the whole city could be in chaos for months, and possibly all of mississippi.

Just like that.....the whole southern coast. In a flash of days....

at what point will some DU'ers realise that some people are not exactly "model" citizens.

Apparently because people are black they are freaking saints or at the very least not responsible for their actions.

I just watched WOR/channel 9 news which is essentially the 'black' channel. They have 2 black anchors and had extensive reporting on NO.

Guess what, they showed people looting CRAP.

Not food or diapers or medical supplies.

CRAP. STUFF. Things that won't help them if the water keeps rising.

38. I think a reality check is needed...
I don't know why you think that no-one in New Orleans is capable of looting (not talking about water and food, but the serious stuff) after a natural disaster like this. The fact is that after most natural disasters there's a small segment of the population that does take advantage of the disaster. It happened in the city I live in, it happened after the tsunami, and unless every single resident of the affected areas from the hurricane are complete saints, it stands to reason that there'd be a few incidents where it happens...

And being FUCKING FRIGHTENED after a disaster is no excuse to shoot another human in the head..

41. Ummmm....no, I'm just not going along with what I'm hearing, reading
or seeing. I have steadily watched stories of looting overtake the real concern of the moment, in my opinion, saving lives. If you had seen a post of mine, which of course sank like a rock because it didn't contain the word "loot", it was pictures taken from the MANY Civil Air Patrol volunteers who are risking life and limb, for no pay, trying to rescue. My daughter's a part of it. That's what I'm caring about.

And yes, I'll repeat it, people are FUCKING FRIGHTENED. May I never have to deal with what every single person is dealing with there right now. It's unimagineable.

Thanks.

52. I'm finding the looting fixations a bit weird,,,
If I didn't check in here, I wouldn't even have heard about looting. The media over here focused on the hurricane and its effects, which I agree is what should be focused on right now...

I haven't had to deal with hurricanes (being in the Southern Hemisphere that'd be an impossibility), but I've been through it with a bushfire. *Fucking frightened* doesn't even begin to describe how scary it is going through a natural disaster. That feeling passed a lot quicker than the feeling of shell-shock and disbelief that sets in afterwards. I think the *fucking frightened* stage usually fades reasonably quickly after the disaster initially hits out of a survival instinct sort of thing....

59. That's terrible, MrsGrumpy...
Tornados scare me more than anything else, which is bizarre since being where I am, I'll never ever encounter one. When the fires happened here, it was the fear that made me go into shut-down mode, and my then 11 year old was the one running round the house gathering up insurance papers and valuables and loading the car. It hit one of my brothers differently. He went into hero-mode and tried to drive into the area my BIL's house was in that was already cordoned off by the police, and got into a pushing and shoving match with a cop who tried to stop him going any further. He had no idea what he was going to do when he got through, but fear was driving him and it didn't matter to him...

My thoughts go out to everyone affected by this hurricane and I hope they get all the help they need to get their lives back to some semblance of normalcy asap...

I'm just starting to get alarmed that this could be happening everywhere soon, and global warming is speeding up.

We don't have an answer and this is getting to be a real disaster, and before any of these criminals get impeached or anything else things could be in total chaos.

And yes I do believe this is punishment, but not for the good people and it definitely has something to do with oil........Warming has become a regular thing with our greenhouse emissions...

Hell, the Pukes stole this last presidential election because Ohioans can't or won't or just don't care to count all their votes and you're going to make cracks about Detroit?
Detroit voted 90 percent Democratic. Ohio just proved they're as corrupt as Florida is.

49. I'm responding to the OP because I don't want to point the finger
...at anyone. I'd just like to remind everyone that when the shooter happens to be an American soldier, "He was under incredible stress" is the favorite freeper rationale. There was an incident a few months ago where a young Marine in Iraq shot a wounded Iraqi in a mosque...because the Iraqi MOVED!!! I'm a little fuzzy on the details and I'm not going to take the time to look it up, but the Marine thought the Iraqi was dead and then he said, "He's moving! He's effing moving!" and then shot him point-blank.

In the online debate that raged afterward, it was the standard freeper argument that the Marine was under incredible stress because a member of his unit had been killed just a day before under very similar circumstances; i.e. he'd been shot and killed by an Iraqi he thought was dead. So there was actually some validity to the "stress" argument, although the Vietnam vets on my home board were noticeably less tolerant than everyone else. They said it was an intolerable breakdown of discipline for something like that to happen.

I'm just saying that whether or not you're willing to give this argument the time of day usually boils down to which team you're rooting for. I just hope everybody gets out alive whether saint or sinner.

55. I am not one of those who blames our soldiers.
I blame our President. While I think neither situation is right, I have learned not to judge facts as they are presented on the news.

56. I've learned in life that 5-10% of people are truly horrible people.
They lie, cheat, steal, etc.

62. You missed the pre-emptive panic from two days ago?
No one here can have a conversation. This is a board of beliefs - and it will always disappoint...

63. "They are looting our cars, while we are trying to save people"
Thats what the spokeswoman from Tulane University medical Center just said on WDSU. The water in the hospital is contaminated with raw sewage, they are running out of food, no electricity....yeah, lets loot the cars of the Hospital workers. She said they had guns in the boat...they were watching from the top stories of the Hospital. They are trying to evacuate patients from the top of the building with helecopters. Just sick in my opinion. :grr:

I heard that too. I guess we're just all freakin' animals when push comes to shove. I just expect more from the DU community. I'm sick to death over this whole deal. I used to live in N.O., This is tearing me apart. I spent a lot of time in the 9th ward and Storyville, I also grew up in a trailer park in east Texas, I know what REAL poverty is.I expect more from the discourse here. forgive me. (Where the hell are the mods?)
Edit for spelling

Children's Hospital under seige
Tuesday, 11:45 p.m.

Late Tuesday, Gov. Blanco spokeswoman Denise Bottcher described a disturbing scene unfolding in uptown New Orleans, where looters were trying to break into Children's Hospital.

Bottcher said the director of the hospital fears for the safety of the staff and the 100 kids inside the hospital. The director said the hospital is locked, but that the looters were trying to break in and had gathered outside the facility.

The director has sought help from the police, but, due to rising flood waters, police have not been able to respond.

Bottcher said Blanco has been told of the situation and has informed the National Guard. However, Bottcher said, the National Guard has also been unable to respond.
