Where are the owners of the cars floating on the streets? |

And the transport trucks lined up? Wouldn't truckers get out of Dodge when the alarm sounded?
I edited cause I didn't mean new cars at dealerships. I wondered why if you own a car (and obviously there were many) wouldn't you get the hell out of town?

this next is tacky, people:
reminds me of a very old joke:
how does detroit get rid of its smog?
Pumps it into all the tires of the cars it ships out.

8. If you can't afford gas you can't go anywhere. |

I remember report that there was no gas. Some could be families' second cars too.

9. Cops, nurses, doctors, firemen, linemen, civil servants, ... |
|
... and all kinds of people needed to repair and care for folks. A car that's 2-3 years old still looks new without rustbelt or sandstrom conditions. Truckers aren't usually going to run their rigs unless they have a load. I'm guessing outbound loads weren't easy to find.
