Just disgusting. Are they even aware they're doing this? I mean, is it ON PURPOSE? Or is their racism so inherent they do it completely unconsciously?

... that this is unconscious racism. Or what I think of as "modern" racism. Another way to look at it is passive-aggressive racism. Another buddy of mine, pointed out how amazed he was at MSNBC's coverage of New Orleans... showing only the struggles of white people, and consistently showing black people negatively.
I actually feel sick by this. The same way I did over the ghoulish behavior of the media during the 9/11 aftermath.

3. I agree--that's a great find |
|
I've been trying to fit this into my brain to see if there's any way that it might not be an example of not-so-subtle racism, but I haven't come up with much. Here's my best guess:
Author of Blurb1 was instructed that the term "looting" should apply to anyone observed to be taking food in the aftermath.
Author of Blurb2 was instructed that the term "finding" should apply to anyone observed to be taking food in the aftermath.
If this were the case, then it might simply be an example of unfortunate--but innocent--photo-placement.
Any chance that this might be what happened? I don't know anything about the editorial structure of AP/AFP, so I don't even know if this kind of thing is feasible, but I'm not holding out much hope...

9. I'm thinking she's hungry and will eat soggy bread none-the-less. |

Nobody can really predict where, when and how disaster will strike, but I really think that the State and Federal governments really buggered this one up.
I also find it interesting how property rights have gone out the window down there. Another friend of mine had said that he heard how the police were co-ordinating taking food and supplies from a super mega monster Wal-Mart down there and giving it to the refugees.

How can they call it looting when these people are fighting to survive? How 'bout we let these people starve to death in the interest of "law and order" :sarcasm: I don't think that a disaster like this should be used as an excuse for indiscriminatory looting and thievery, but I think that there are extenuating circumstances here.

14. No doubt...these supplies would've just rotted on the shelf, anyway... |
|
Store insurance would cover the inventory, in any case.
This ain't a fire drill. The storekeepers aren't coming back anytime soon to reopen and sell what would have been left on the shelves if the 'looters' hadn't taken it.
If these people can eat, so much the better.
