the oil companies were going to gouge us asap, I filled up. 2.60$ yesterday, $28 to fill up my nissan. During the Clinton years, I could fill up for like $11, taxes and regulations and all
Today I saw a Gas station with $3.06. It is probably going to be like $3.30 by tonight

My Nissan could be filled for less than $15 last year. Now it costs over $30.
The thing is, I'm actually a capitalist. I believe the market will correct itself once consumers say, "enough." The trouble is, consumers keep paying to drive their bloody SUVs. They'll bitch, alright, but they'll pay. It's crazy!

Right...sure.
It'll come down a bit...but the oil companies are enjoying record profits. Barring some MAJOR action somewhere, you'll never fill that Nissan for anywhere near $15 again.

...I'm just saying that a "tipping point" may be in sight, as there was in the early seventies when people stopped buying their muscle cars and bought Hondas and Toyotas.

20. I filled up at $2.59 with half a tank - Pittsburgh, PA |
|
Already I was seeing $2.69 at some stations and over $2.70 at another. So I got just under 5 gallons at $2.59 before that went up. I drive a Vibe that gets 24-29mpg depending where/when I drive.
I'm staying over at work surfing the net so I don't hit rush hour traffic. I'm lucky I'm in IT and can a bit more flexible on my hours so I don't normally have to sit in rush hour wasting gas. Bad part is I have a bit over 40 mile round trip commute.
As to what I've cut back on: I'm single so I eat out a lot, but I'm now avoiding the restaurants where I pay over $10 and have to leave a tip. I've been doing Panera, Boston Market, Fuddrucker's (chili, salad and beer for a bit over $8). No going to movies, no movie rentals, no fancy coffees, etc. Lunch is eat in, either a self-made salad, canned soup/chili, frozen $2.50-$3 entree, etc.
And I'm truly frightened what I have to pay for heating oil this winter. Fortunately I can turn the heat off while at work and I'm already thinking if it's a cold day on a weekend I may camp out at a bookstore so I can keep the heat off till late night.

35. Explain to me this one thing... |
|
When there is uncertainty in the energy markets, due to a catastrophe or war or whatever, and crude oil prices rise, the prices at the gas pumps immediately rise along with it.
Now, after Bush announced that the strategic petroleum reserves would be tapped, crude dropped below $70/bbl -- yet gas prices spiked $.60 today, here in Omaha! What's the deal?
