Today, I Am Profoundly Grateful For Everything I Have |
|
I've been out in the heat and humidity for most of the day, index here at 92. And as I dripped my way home to A/C and iced tea I couldn't help but think of those thousands jammed into that fetid stadium, no water, no sanitary conditions. I wished they could go home like me.

4. Yes. Any bitching any of us have today needs to be saved for another time. |

If we have water, food, and a roof over our heads, it's a time to be thankful.

Having been through the flood of Isabel here on the coast in NC, I have an idea of what they are feeling... in no way was the devastation as bad as what I'm seeing now, but, there are no words for the state of their mental health right now. It will take years for these people to feel normal again. I want to get in my car and pick up people and bring them here to stay at my home but gas prices are so sky high right now, that is not an option! I can say that if anyone needs somewhere to stay and reads this post they are welcome in my home... I can accomodate a family of 5-6 in my home free of charge, meals included! I wish I could JUST DO SOMETHING! It is so FRUSTRATING!

But there for the Grace of God, go I - what would we do if faced with the same conditions of just getting through the day?

Even after last year having four hurricanes going through Florida, the worst we had was no power for 10 days. I can't even imagine what these poor people are going through. Time to count blessing. Thanks for posting this.

This past Sunday when it all began I was just thinking of how lucky I am to live in the area I'm at now. I don't have to worry about earth quakes, torando's, hurricanes, snow storms. None of that. The weather is pretty nice today too at 85º and sunny.

9. yep. I was feeling sorry for myself |
|
and my impending move from my home of the past 13 years into a dinky, cheaper joint.
but it will have electricity and phones and a working refrigerator and a short walk to a functioning grocery store.
man, I am lucky.

11. Last night after watching the news |
|
My wife and I watched CNN last night in stunned silence.
We watched the desperation of the thousands of refugees huddled in the squalid conditions of the darkened dome. The heartbreak of a beautiful historic city lost beneath a devastating flood. The knowledge that soon the horrors of disease and death will multiply among a million homeless and dispossessed without adequate food, water, shelter or medical aid. The families separated and torn apart. Outrage at the blatant racism of some of the media. The truly dignified pleas of the Mayor of NO, and one articulate citizen, reminding the world of the treasure that has been possibly lost forever. Beneath their eloquence, the grief was palpable, an unspoken call for help - in the southern way.
And the staggering knowledge that so much more could have been done.
We went to bed almost in silence and held each other for the longest time. "I think of all those people. Everything lost. Don't know what I'd do if I lost you. This is all that's important." Little Jack, our cat, jumped on the bed and settled snugly between us. We were warm and safe for now, and we had each other.
I won't forget these blessings.

It's odd -- I just got my school taxes in the mail, and I'm happy that there is a school here for the children of our community, even if the damned taxes are going out of sight.
