17. But did he do anything...
that anyone else who happened to be mayor of NYC on that day wouldn't have done? He was just the person occupying the office at the time. There's no reason to think Koch, Dinkins or Bloomberg would have done any worse.

20. That's why I don't understand why some heralded him as some
hero after Sept. 11th when any other mayor would have done the same thing.

23. well speaking for myself when he gave the press conference
and said what they were doing to handle the situation it calmed me down. He was the one authority figure who seemed to be in charge.

Bush didn't get on a mike until the end of the day...he was running scared.

If you ask me whoever said this on CNN is dissing Bush bigtime.

19. He walked down a street and had an appropriate expression...
on his face.

That was it.

I guess because he didn't run away and hide it makes him a freeper hero.

Lowered expectations.

9. Can you blame people for saying that? They're starving for leadership
in times of crisis and for all his faults, Giuliani was a leader on 9/11.

11. Just trying to remind their base of Rudy's finest hour
Seriously the best days Giuliani ever had as mayor were right after the September 11 attacks, and as much as it pains me to say it, he acted like a leader is supposed to act during a crisis.

CNN, of course, would really like to see Giuliani on the Republican ticket in 2008, because it would make drawing their fat paycheckes for their sinecures that much easier, so they're tossing a little politicking into their reportage.

There is no depth they won't plumb.

13. I hate Rudy as much as anyone else
but I'm a native NYer and Rudy did know how to run things. He might be a bit of a gestapo but he made things happen and a lot of things did get better.

21. They're right, to a degree.
The problem is, Bush isn't helping AT ALL.

He didn't help at all on 9/11 either.

There are two differences here:

1-Rudy is a bitchy control freak. He was everywhere, knew everything, was on tv all the time. Usually, it sucked. For that time, it worked.

2-Rudy *could* be on tv all the time, because the situation wasn't deteriorating by the minute, the Twin Towers fell inwardly/in such a way the entire city wasn't threatened....I'm pretty sure most New Yorkers had power and clean drinking water too.

Poor Mayor Nagin is dealing with a very different situation. His entire city is underwater. He can't be everywhere at once.

24. Rudy 'Thank God Bush refused the HartRudman Report on Global Terror
that was handed to him on Jan 30, 2001, or Sept.11 wouldn't have happened and I wouldn't be as rich or famous as I am now" Giuliani?

That's the only one I know.

25. Ray Nagin has succeeded Rudy as "America's Mayor"
as far as I'm concerned. He seems to be the one elected official who is actually trying to do something instead of merewly wringing his hands in despair.

26. I can't stand Rudy, but as a New Yorker he did make me feel better
on that confusing day.He stepped up that day (I can't even remember listening to Bush talk). I couldn't stand Rudy before 9/11 and didn't like him after, but he knew what to do on that horrible day.

I'm not a New Yorker, but it was nice to hear words from somebody in control that day. Bush didn't say more than two words before he took his 747 on a tour of the southwestern quarter of the country. This week has just been another replay of failed leadership not responding properly to a problem.
