10,000 may need temporary housing - Rapides Parish, LA

By Wednesday, the number of hurricane evacuees in Central Louisiana stood at 4,000, a dip from Tuesday's 6,000, said Leann Murphy, CEO of the Central Louisiana Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Police and other emergency officials have been told to expect up to 10,000 or more evacuees who might need temporary housing, a phrase used for longer-term places to stay than current shelters will provide, said Sonya Wiley, director of the Rapides Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness.

And while they call Central Louisiana their home, the evacuees will need food, shelter, medical help, federal and state financial assistance, and maybe a job.

Pete Maravich Assembly Center used as triage center

Along with thousands of other refugees from the New Orleans area who had either been airlifted or brought by bus, ambulance or car, Breaux was waiting in a line of patients to be examined by medics.

With beds strewn about the basketball court, the PMAC is serving as a makeshift hospital. The stadium's north entrance is a triage hub for medics, volunteers and a constant stream of patients.

"People are either getting triaged here, treated here or being sent out to other shelters," said Tom Harris, a spokesman for EMS who also is coordinating the ambulance transfers. "Nobody stays here permanently. They get treatment, they get sent out to other shelters or they get treated here, stabilized and sent to hospitals."

All over town, law-enforcement authorities were using their vehicles sparingly because they're almost out of fuel.

2 shelters open in Hammond, LA

At the present, two shelters are being opened in Hammond, both on the Southeastern campus.

The University Center and the 'special needs shelter' in the SLU Kinesiology and Health Studies Building will both be opened.

The National Guard Headquarters Support Company, 205th Engineering Battalion, is assisting both shelters with personnel and equipment.

"We have sent 10 soldiers, three high-water vehicles and 200 cots to the special needs unit," said Sgt. Chad Goynes, "and 15 men to the University Center. We have also sent 10 soldiers and three high-water vehicles to aid the Troop C State Police."
