Chertoff LIES on NPR - denies thousands at Conv Ctr are w/o food & water

Robert Siegel: We are hearing from our reporter, he's on another line right now, thousands of people at the convention center in New Orleans with no food, zero.

Chertoff: As I said, I'm telling you we are getting food and water to areas where people are staging. The one about an episode like this is if you talk to someone or you get a rumor or an anecdotal version of something I think it's dangerous to extrapolate it all over the place.

Robert Siegel: But Mr. Secretary when you say we shouldn't listen to rumors. These are things coming from reporters who have not only covered many many other hurricanes, they've covered wars and refugee camps. These aren't rumors, they are saying there are thousands of people there.

Chertoff: I would be -- I have not heard a report of thousands of people in the convention center who don't have food and water.

The whole country is watching on live TV as people around the convention center are dying of dehydration and starvation. Yet Chertoff has the nerve to lie to our face and say it isn't happening.

FEMA for some bizarre reason refuses to airdrop in water and sandwiches.

The people who made it through Katrina are being killed by Chertoff.

3. FEMA's Brown said Convention Ctr. was getting food and water

twice a day. That's not what was going on with the people.

This is why some people who watch television have the impression that the people in New Orleans are finally being helped.

5. This is sheer insanity...

We've got WWL sneaking past the NG to get back into New Orleans to report (the WWL reporters said that NG aren't allowing reorters back into NO); we've got reporters like Anderson Cooper telling people he's seeing rats eating the dead in the street; we've got Tony Zumbado's video of the poor people at the convention center BEGGING for water, pleading for help...

How DARE these people tell us these are 'rumors'!!!

8. I listened to this interview on NPR news!!!!!

This was an INCREDIBLE interview - both for the amazing coldness and uncaring demeanor of Chertoff, and for the GREAT job the interviewer did keeping Chertoff's feet to the fire. He was almost yelling at him about why they had done nothing to help the people at the Convention Center, where the NG or PD had SENT THEM because they didn't want to take them in at the Superdome.

I wanted to throw things and scream by the end of it. And then I just sat down and wept.
