6. "People DIED in there (the Superdome)!" |
|
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 12:34 AM by Mugsy
I wish I was recording at the time.
When I captured those shots, a lady with her family reported that "People *died* in there (the Superdome)! That's something you'all (in the media) don't know about." She also said women... children... being raped. Frightening.
They described feces on the floors because there was no plumbing, food (MRE's) but no water. And then they arrived in Houston (on the provided busses) only to be told there is no room. One report says 11,337 people are in the Dome right now.
I hope someone follows up.

What they showed looked pretty orderly. Lots of cots and trash cans around.

11. It's better than where they were, no doubt, but |
|
I don't know. It's hard to feel good about it. Better than before, but still not good. Which one of our candidates said that "Good enough" shouldn't be an American slogan?

9. And that's the best we can do for Americans? Our own people? |
|
You know, the ones who pay taxes and vote and own this country? I mean, I know it's an improvement over the Superdome, but...
I guess people who think Gauntanamo is a Carribean resort think this is the American dream.
Oh my god.

23. Well, taking in about 50,000 people and having facilities ready |
|
isn't easy. By the time they fill up the Astrodome, Reliant Center, and the George R. Brown Convention Center, there will be upwards of 50,000.
While it's no picnic and you nor I would trade places with these people right now, the fact is that they are getting hot meals, showers, clean clothes, medical care, clean bathrooms, telephones, toys for the kids, and reunions with family members arriving to pick them up. Churches are making plans to adopt families out of the shelters and bring them into homes with support for rebuilding their lives.
I heard earlier today that a reporter stated that some toilets were backing up in the Astrodome. The difference in this at the Superdome and at the Astrodome, is that at the Astrodome they called in plumbers to fix it.
The seriously ill are being carried by EMS to the Texas Medical Center at some of the finest hospitals in the country.
It's a start.

other common abbrev is "n/t" (no text)
to indicate that there is nothing in the body of the post, so that if someone is scanning the titles, they know not to stop at/expand that one.
-- don't worry, been here for years and still running across acronyms/abbreviations I don't get.
a belated welcome to DU, and thanks, from me, definitely meant for you ;-)
