Anti Stem cell legislation threatens to jail egg doners(texas)

Why is S.B. 943 a bad bill for Texas?

S.B. 943 does not distinguish between reproductive cloning and therapeutic cloning. Reproductive cloning is designed to create an embryo that becomes a cloned, fully grown human being. This potential practice is universally opposed by the mainstream scientific community. Therapeutic cloning is designed simply to grow a group of stem cells that are genetically identical to the cells of a person seeking medical treatment.
S.B. 943 criminalizes sound medical practice. As written, S.B. 943 would make it a felony – with a fine of up to $500,000 – for a doctor to provide treatment developed from therapeutic cloning of stem cells.
Patients, scientists and doctors participating in research involving therapeutic cloning could be prosecuted – even if the patient were sending his or her own cells to researchers outside Texas.
A mother who donates an unfertilized egg to help her ill child grow stem cells could face prosecution.
