Is it going to be another fluff speech or is actually going to announce that we're sending in the 101st to clean house?

OMG!

The speech was worse than I thought.

Terrible reaction to a massive disaster.

This is a speech that should not have been given--better to give no speech at all. Boy did this give the libs fodder!

I wish the President Bush would have said how $500 million a day is being spent by FEMA. I don't see $500 million a day by FEMA for the disaster. Does anybody else?

The RATs are disgraceful and I believe all this "speech" did was give them fodder to raise hell.

The problem is, these kinds of conversations are happening all over the US right now. And it's not just "hicks" and Democrats who are having them.

Bush is in serious trouble. This Katrina disaster is a torpedo aimed at the heart of his presidency. If the administration doesn't WAKE UP to the frustration, disappointment, desperation, and outrage that are building over this, it will be a disaster for the Republican party.

This is a huge mistake, he has no reason to be there, it will draw a number of needed security personnel away from where they are needed most, its a PR stunt, and a bad one, he ought to send his own helicopter in for search and rescue.

One of the many things I can't stand about Bush is that he learned a lot from Bill Clinton when it comes to photo ops. It's style over substance, baby!

I'm beginning to think he's a man of few words and fewer actions. I'm really trying to pull for GWB, but his handling of major crisis issues lately leaves a lot to be desired.

I agree. However, we sometimes want and expect our President to offer comforting words. Especially in times of hardship or tragedy.

It's part of the job description, and right now Bush is failing miserably in that department.

Michael Brown, on the TODAY show, basically admitted that he was clueless going in, and is still clueless. Katie Couric had him cornered like a whipped dog.

I'm beginning to turn on this thing. If there is not some visible presence of the Guard and the Military today, and the sky is not filled with helicopters and the ground covered with buses, then one has to conclude that nobody is in charge.

" I've been a big Bush supporter, but who are the nitwits he's hired to run FEMA?"

But don't forget...the Bush Administration created the Homeland Security dept which is over FEMA. Just another layer of government to screw up and they are screwing up BIG TIME!

Angcat, it's not just "these people" who are growing uncomfortable with the President's handling of the situation. It's the whole damned country, many Republicans and conservatives included.

I'm not saying "he's finished." There is still time for him to gain control of the situation. But he needs to change his approach and change it quickly.

How? We can't sugarcoat this. I do not understand why this spech was given in that it really did not add anything. All this speech did was give the RATs more to scream about.

I get the impression that Bush and his advisors are so sweamped and the situation of violence in New Orleans so bad that too little thought was put into this speech.

It should not have been given. A better prepared specch should have been delivered.

Let's see...handling of Iraq War, gasoline prices (before the hurricane, certainly now), wants to reform tax code but hasn't presented anything, Social Security (that seems to have faded)...

Don't get me wrong...I LIKE GWB, but he's not the best at taking "conceptions" and turning them into reality. He needs to surround himself with less yes men and more "do-ers"

I am a huge Bush supporter but I really dont think he has stepped up to the plate quick enough on this one. Yes the democrat idiots in Louisiana have been no help before or after the Hurricane but Bush will end up taking a big fall if he does not get this situation under control TODAY. People are going to really start dropping like flies the next few days and those are images that will stick with the American people forever. 100 years from now people are not going to go "Who was New Orleans mayor then why didn't he do anything?" they will go "Who was the President then, why didn't he do anything?"

Yep. And Michael Brown said on TODAY that the additional 30,000 Guard troops would "be there by Monday."

MONDAY????

I realize there's not a lot of area to stage things, but where the hell are the logistics people from the military? These guys can figure this stuff out on the fly.

Brown is in over his head, Blanco is in over her head, and Nagin is completely worthless. And Chertoff's bureaucrat-speak is getting on my nerves. Where's Bernie Kerik when you need him?

There needs to be order restored and massive food drops, TODAY!!

If there's not, and people are dying on the streets, then I'm going to have conclude that nobody is in charge.

I am not "on his back".

The world is awaiting words from thel eader of the nation. The assumption was that if the leader speaks, the magnatude of this crisis leads one to assume the speech will have some meat to it.

This speech (or these remarks) had no "meat" to it, so I say it just should not have been given to a more fully prepared and longer speech was delivered. The nation deserves that due to the magnatude of the crisis.

Please understand.

I just don't understand why Bush's confidence and verve have disappeared: again this morning, he was halting, disconnected, and unsure of himself.

Remember his second and third Kerry debate performances? That's the confidence and fire we need.

I like the man, I voted for him twice but Christ he is painful to listen to Aside from all the 'um's' (which about made my head explode) he basically didn't say squat other than that this is 'unacceptable' and that he is 'looking forward' to his visit. Like it's a bar mitzvah.

I totally agree. I'm a big Bush supporter, but this is ridiculous. Granted, NOLA has huge problems with crime, and all the inmates are running the show right now like some Mad Max movie. If we can't get a grip on a natural disaster, how will we respond to a terrorist attack?

We should have had military security down there immediately with a bunch of cattle trucks and semis (installed with a porta-potty) to round up all the rioters, gangbangers and looters. When evacuating the SuperDome or the NO Convention Center, leave the felons and convert it to a jail.

Water, first aid, radios, and MREs should be airdropped to the areas of need.

Drop leaflets to warn looters will be shot. Make an example of one.

Get Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson down there calm down the populace.

Restoring order is not rocket science... it just takes initiative and guts.

Then somebody should be saying that. Half of this effort is perception. And the perception is that nobody knows what the hell they're doing.

There are no explanations, there's no reassurance, there's no detailing of logistics, there's no timetables (other than to say that the 30,000 Guardspeople will be in place THREE DAMNED DAYS from now).

Look, I love this president, but he has two people in charge of the worst single disaster to ever face this country who have ZERO experience with disasters.

Forget Blanco and Nagin. They should be shoved to the side, and somebody who will inspire some confidence should become the face of this response. Chertoff is not it, Brown is not it, and, unfortunately, Bush is not it, so far.

They are concerend that Bush might take a hit from all the "bad publicity" from his "less than perfect" speech.

They don't seem concered at all that we have an incompent, unconcerened, moronic jackass in charge and pretty much have been without leadership of any kind for five years now.

They are more concerned about the failed chimp and his "Image" than they are the poor, starving-to-death, dying people in NO. Why were they so concerned about Schaivo (spelling?) starving (who was already dead) than they are about the LIVING human beings starving to death??? To them, it's all about the chimp's IMAGE!!!!!

54. Never fear, soon they will regroup and blame Democrats for Katrina
They'll say Hillary and a coven of witches brought the storm in to make the monkey look bad. That this was an attack on their Xtian values, that the poor deserved what they got...

They aren't reality-based. They are reeling now, but they'll come up with some absurd horseshit to justify their leader's failure to lead.

And if all that fails to resonate, they will whip out the CLENIS, like they always do...

Blanco has done every goddamned thing in her power and has been begging for help for five fucking days. I'll even go to other side of the aisle: Barbour has done every goddamned thing in his power and has been begging for help for five fucking days.

The help that's been needed could only be mustered by the federal government and Bush has waited for five fucking days!

I mean...after all....this is a "War President" Not a "Natural Disaster President". He needs to look after the rich 1st! To comfort the comfortable! 137. No, he did not act appropriately
he 'acted' as in 'performing arts'. Giuliani, like Bush and his ilk, did not one single thing to make NY safe from a terrorist attack especially considering that it had happened before.

He ignored all warnings and told NYers for eight years that NY was the 'safest city in the world'. After 1993, many NYers were seriously concerned about his cavalier attitude towards this issue. He did round up the, homeless, the winos and chestnut sellers which made him popular with the ruling class who do not like to have see 'those people' on their precious Manhattan streets.

He also built himself a 'command center bunker' ala Dick 'undisclosed location' Cheney, which made thinking NYers even more nervous.

On New Year's eve, the millenium, he told NYers (obviously concerned about terrorism) to go to Times Sq. 'We will show them we are not worried, because we are the safest city in the world' (sound like anyone?) No thanks to him, the Millenium Plot terrorist experts warned about, but were ignored, was uncovered by an alert, Canadian security guard.

When 9/11 happened, the 'great mayor of NY' couldn't get into his bunker because he was stupid enough to build it so close to what everyone, but he, knew would most likely be the target of terrorists. We would never have seen him except on video, safely acting as though he was in control, had his bunker survived. The NYCFD had warned about that building and the chemicals stored there. Their warnings fell on deaf ears at Gracie Mansion. The building fell and that has yet to be explained.

It was in Building 7. So he wandered around looking dazed and was presented to us by the best PR people in the world, as a 'leader'. Those of us who had watched him over the years since 1993, were horrified that he was not hauled before Congress and held accountable for his neglect of security in a city already attacked by terrorists.

Please do not call this man competent. It furthers the myth of 9/11 and hopefully one day, his role of neglect will be fully explored.

Before 9/11, the people of NY had judged Mayor Giuliani. His approval ratings were at 25%. 9/11 changed all that as it did for so many other incompetents.

that leads me to believe these Freeps will turn on BushCo. Some of them are just pissed that there are two levels to the incompetence (FEMA and Homeland Security) and don't want either of them. Others are still saying things like "I'm trying to pull for Bush"

Once a scumbag, always a scumbag. Once the crisis is over (if it ever is) they will be right back to voting for people who want to destroy our social infrastructure (as if it hasn't already been gutted). And this is what is fundamentally wrong with this country. We want the services, but we don't want to pay for them. At least not enough of us, anyway.

this is why i said yesterday it was not clinton supporting bush, it is clear to reasonable people that bush is clueless, and maybe clinton can step in and save soem lives. that bush is imcompotent.

the repug i have had to be quiet with, i dont any longer. last four days, i sya ugly about bush and they agree.

it is the gutting of repug.

28. Hmmm - don't these people at freeperville realize that the only
people that got out because there was some sort of warning were the PEOPLE WITH CARS AN MONEY, and that this administration could give a shit about the poor people that had NO WAY OUT?? See below from freeperville: (PS: notice their spelling errors again: catastropy & magnatude)(I know, that's trivial but.......)!

To: Dog
Wonder what this situation would have been like had there been no warning at all???

If we think it's bad now - and it is - imagine what an "unannounced" catastropy of this magnatude would have been like.

44. I think it's time to start blaming the mayor for some of this mess
I've seen pictures of school buses in parking stations that are now totally underwater.

Is there a reason why the mayor didn't put out the call to activate these buses when the storm was just approaching and evacuate the poor and infirm?

It appears that local preparation was pretty lacking from the get go and it seems the mayor is getting an undeserved pass on everything he could have done but didn't.

66. Well, unlike Bush or FEMA officials, the mayor
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 11:30 AM by intheflow
had just witnessed the total destruction of his whole life and home. Meanwhile, I doubt there was much gas for the buses, no electricity to pump it, perhaps thousands of emergency personal missing and no way to contact anyone who was off duty to drive the buses or conduct an evacuation. Also unlike Bush, the mayor was on the scene, probably didn't really sleep at all from Sunday morning until Tuesday evening, and was calling the WH first thing after the storm, but the WH wouldn't take his calls.

I think a combination of shock, sleep-deprivation, no local communication network, and absolutely no help from the federal government entitles the mayor to a free pass.

*Edited for typo.

83. I was thinking the same thing--"Bush is toast." But then I was thinking:
Get ready for the War Democrat that the war profiteers are going to shove down our throats as our only choice. They've now got control of the election system, with SECRET, PROPRIETARY software "counting" all the votes behind closed doors. We won't be permitted to choose an antiwar populist. They need somebody to do a better war in the Middle East, to complete the looting of Iraq and the U.S., to maintain "order," to run the breadlines, and to get a Draft. (No way Bush can invade Iran and Syria now--not enough cannon fodder, no political cache left to get more.) What could happen if a War Democrat is selected is that it could rip the Dem Party to shreds, once and for all--and then we'll get Jeb (in '12), and our democracy will be over.

Solution? We need to be very strategic in our thinking about this. No way we can avoid having a War Democrat being "selected." But we can probably get something for our support, and I think our first priority should be election reform. That's a progressive, good government value that most Democrats would have to at least pay lip service to. The reform needs to take place at the state/local level--NOT the federal level (we DON'T WANT any more federal meddling in elections--they've done enough harm!). We just need time, focus and better Dem Party political direction with regard to the bipartisan corruption of state/local election officials (corrupted by the $4 billion Fed boondoggle to purchase bad election systems, and by lavish lobbying by Bushite voting machine companies). If we can break through this corruption, it is very, very, very, very simple to set up transparent, verifiable elections (it's a no brainer!):

Paper ballots hand-counted at the precinct level (--Canada does it in one day, although speed should not even be a consideration, just accuracy and verifiability)

or, at the least...

Paper ballot (not "paper trail") backup of all electronic voting, a 10% audit (automatic recount), strict security, and NO SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code! (...jeez!).

60. Um ... black Democrats.
Right now they are trying to appeal to the suffering populace ... predominately black. IMHO, that is why Clinton is involved - not because he can get things done (perhaps he can) but because he is respected and admired in the African American communities. They will listen to him. I think the admin. realizes that they have no hold on these people, who were abandoned by this party long ago. They fear total anarchy and Clinton is damage control ... credibility by association. They really have no one else to offer. Sad really. I don't however think that these Freeps will ever be on our side. We will continue to be "you people". But it will certainly make them pay more attention to domestic policy and funding - and given how f@#ked up everything is right now, I'll take whatever we can get.

I do find it so telling that one poster mentioned the Bush from Debate 2 and 3. Um, he was wired for those debates after his frightening performance on the first. Do you think some of his supporters will finally get it? The stammering lost man IS our president!! He is not the one that looks so calm and collected during photo ops and staged events.

My friends. The Emperor has no clothes, and even his vehement supporters can finally see that. And.. where the hell is Cheney? Traditionally, the Vice President makes the first, immediate, trip to the disaster area. Al Gore always did that, as did Bush's father. Where is Cheney??? Do any of the freepers wonder that?

As to the assholes that bash Nagin . . . he did his job, he did it well. . . if the Bush administration hadn't stolen the funding out from under the efforts to reinforce the levees, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

While Bush played golf, Nagin did his job. While Bush strummed a guitar, Nagin did his job. While Bush flew over from the safety of his jet, Nagin did his job. While Bush talked about infrastructure and oil, Nagin was on the ground with human beings. While Nagin was calling every office in the Federal government asking for assistance, the head of FEMA must have been on the toilet because it took him 3 days to figure out what the rest of the country already new about the Convention Center, etc.

Even the most liberal of republicans, I have heard saying this phrase.

Unfortunately, we aren't talking about reelection. I don't see where any of this goes. Perhaps like my very first post to a political forum, ever- Impeachment.

I just don't understand why Bush's confidence and verve have disappeared: again this morning, he was halting, disconnected, and unsure of himself.

Remember his second and third Kerry debate performances? That's the confidence and fire we need.

Perhaps the poster should go back and watch those debates again with his new eyes. He is just now seeing what we saw all along.

dying. Then there is the "round them up and put them in cattle trucks and shoot to kill" line. Cute. Amazingly, they did find a way to bring in the Clenis™:

One of the many things I can't stand about Bush is that he learned a lot from Bill Clinton when it comes to photo ops. It's style over substance, baby!

They have a loooooonnnng way to go to reach the threshold of sanity, but some of them are moving in the right direction.

127. mixed feelings...
I'm thrilled to read bushbots waking up and being critical of their king.

...but, heartbroken that we had to fall so far and suffer such a massive disaster and horrific results for the brainwashed bushbots to open their eyes and finally SEE.

If indications are correct, this is the beginning of an extremely difficult 3-4 months and longer. We have dark days ahead.

Reminds me of the Letter to America written by Eve Ensler, in which she pleads for apathetic America to wake up to our new reality. Sounds like they are waking up.

Dear America,

I am longing to reach you - crossing this river of indifference and consumption and denial. I am trying to find you, reaching out through the desperate limitations of words and descriptions, swimming through the rhetoric of terror and God.

I need you to wake up. The house is on fire and you are still sleeping, lulled by the intoxication of smoke and mirrors. I need you to wake up and I know that shaking you, scaring you will only make you cling to your sleep and sleep more.

snip

America, those who now control our country have changed and ended law. I do not believe you are so calloused or selfish that you do not care. Your sleep is induced. You are distracted and derailed. The corporations have concocted and perfected these sleeping potions for years...

snip

America, there is not much time left. The fire is spreading, consuming the world. We are the arsonists. We will need each other to find our way out through the lies and haze. It will take our greatest imagination, courage and skill to subdue these flames.
