Red Cross is refusing to feed refugees housed in homes.....

"I know this is from a Soap Message Board and is long but it is worth the read."

<snip>

We don't' understand why the Red Cross is refusing to feed refugees housed in homes all up and down the state. We are told they must be IN the shelter to have hand outs from the Red Cross - and yet the shelters are full - they can't HANDLE the people. So hundreds of citizens are taking them in - and assistance is being denied to those not in the shelters. The reason given for this - at least at our Red Cross office - is because "regular citizens" might try and take food they are not entitled to - so they can only feed those who are in their shelters.

OTHER agencies (not the Red Cross) are addressing that by simply asking to see an ID verifying that the refugee is from a devastated area. The address alone is proof they are from areas that no longer exist. And even after it has been discussed with the Red Cross (that this person can prove they are from a hard hit area) - still the Red Cross will not give them food.

The Central Louisiana Food Bank is - tomorrow - opening the doors for my group....finally (it will be five days after the fact).....finally they will get their first bit of help from an institution (as opposed to individuals).

So if you are going to give money - I recommend giving it to agencies who are actually getting the supplies to the needy. Some of the churches have decided to help by opening their own kitchens as the rules and regulations are simply not working in this particular disaster. It might have worked in the past but not this time. Give the money to your local church. They will get it to us.

2. Please do not give to the Red Cross
If you've given already, ask for it back and give to the Salvation Army.

The Red Cross makes the the Army and Federal government look efficient.

Based on my families experience in Camille, please give to the SA.

The Red Cross is worthless

7. Don't start this shit about the Red Cross like O'Reilly did during 9/11
The Red Cross is usually always the first on the sceane with help for anybody in big crisis situations. Sometimes they are stretched to the gills. People housing EVACUEES should be able to feed them for a couple of days until more some things get sorted out. Maybe the government will be able give out vouchers to people who are feeding and housing evacuees. OR MAYBE SOME PEOPLE WILL JUST FEED OTHERS BY SHARING AND CUTTING BACK ON THEIR OWN NEEDS OUT OF THE GOODNESS OF THEIR HEARTS!!

O'Reilly did much damage Red Cross contributions right after the 9/11 situation...all unfounded. They were hurting to make up the difference. So please, let you conscience be your guide but I find no reason to NOT contribute to the Red Cross as PART of your good deeds during this crisis.

5. heaven help those who've lost their ID
this is nuts -- how can people be expected to show an ID when they've escaped with nothing?

We spend more money trying to keep aid from a few "undeserving" people than is reasonable. Jesus said to give freely, with no reservation, to anyone who asked. What is the MATTER??!!

6. If a citizen has taken them in, they have water
and some food for the moment. Don't know what is right or wrong in this situation but just hope and pray we save many, many more people than we have. Prayers for all.
