'Don't buy gas if you don't need it' - WTF? |
|
Who buys gas that they don't need? Do people buy it to pour on their lawns or something. I buy it because my vehicle NEEDS it to run.

we have to do our patriotic duty, and conserve gas for rich Repukes. After all, how can Duffy and Buffy get to the Society Gala at the country club, if they can't gas up the Mercedes and the BMW? Gee, you'd think those old nasty working class people have to go to jobs, or something?

Don't buy gas if you don't need it. Yeah, thanks. I'll remember that.

17. Someone was interviewed yesterday who filled 2 cars, his boat. . . |
|
and a motorhome (100 gallons in that vehicle alone) -- not because he was going anywhere, but so he'd have a private stash "just in case." It is these sorts of unanticipated pressures on supply that cause runs on fuel and ultimately drive up costs and beat down the system's capacity to respond to demand.
In the '70s, people used to fill all sorts of containers with fuel and store them in the trunks of their cars. Not only did they have a deleterious effect on availability and price, they became moveable firebombs and a threat to us all.
One idiot a couple of miles from where I lived at the time filled a 55-gallon drum with gas and stored it in his hall closet. Great idea, I guess, until the fumes made their way to his water heater and the resultant explosion destroyed three-quarters of the apartment building he was in.
So much as we like to make fun of Bush and ridicule most of his pronouncements, I can't find much to criticize about this latest bit of advice.

4. I think they mean if it isn't low. I bought today with 3/4 of a tank |
|
because I know it is going to go up more.

that if you have half a tank, wait until you are low, don't fill up just because. if you have two cars, consider parking one this weekend. that's the idea.
as much as I like to hear Bush talk conservation...whew.

6. There is some value to saying such a thing. Given that the supply of gas |
|
has decreased, people may be scared of shortages. If they decide to buy gas just in case something goes wrong it will only lead to a further upward pressure on gas prices. What we should all be doing in a time like this is conserving gasoline and other energy resources as much as possible so the price doesn't continue to increase and there are no shortages.

8. Actually, I bought gas last week before Katrina when I didn't need it, |
|
so now I don't have to buy any for a bit. So I guess Bush should be saying 'buy gas when you don't need it, so you don't have to buy it after I've screwed the pooch and there's no gas left in the entire US and I've allowed prices to escalate to the point you must hand over your first born child.'

9. I'm trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, I know, but it's |
|
a Friday before a long weekend -- I'm assuming he was trying to tell us not to go out and top the tank off every day and add to the problem.

12. Does he mean don't drive if you don't have to? |
|
That would be a good message, but then someone might have to sacrafice something so that can't be what he meant.

19. People ARE doing this |
|
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 04:02 PM by LostinVA
I saw someone filling up two 55-gallon barrels yesterday. That's why I';m agreeing with some rationing of 10-15 gallons. This is hoarding and is creating an artificial shortage and higher prices. Crazy.
