???? Death toll of 20,000 in New Orleans??????
They said that 20% could not flee/decided to stay

City population is 500,000

100,000 remained in the city. Lets be uber conservative and say 80,000

If they have shipped 25,000 out and 25,000 or so are at the convention center/dome. That is 50,000 left throughout out the city.

say another 20,000 got out somehow before the floods.

Say 10,000 city residents are in their homes and ok (idiots though they may be) even though everyone had been ordered out.

That leaves 20,000 missing and it being over 5 days now in stifling heat and no water... I have little hope they are alive.

Am I off in my math? for God's sake I hope so.

1. 100,000 Households in New Orleans
did not have transportation. Many of them, especially the sick and the elderly could not get out with out assistance. Bush was too busy on vacation to bother to send any assistance.

9. that seems low to me
the 2000 census siad there were 484,000 residents.

You have tofundge that up a bit because ot census undercounting plus you have 5 uears of modest population growth.

SO 500,00 residents seems plausible if not consrviative. byt that would mean 5 epople per household to lonly have 100,000.

It has to be more households.. I just checkek the sensus said 188,000 houesholds

3. That's half-way towards the number of civilian Iraqis killed since the
US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. That would be an infamous achievement, President Bush: two years to kill 25,000 civilian Iraqis; one week to kill 10,000 civilian Americans?

4. Those numbers are similar to the ones the scientists predicted
Several studies of just such a storm have been done in the last ten years, and they all yielded scenarios very close to what we've seen this week.

In these studies, the death tolls expected ranged from 10,000 to 100,000.

6. "Idiots though they may be"?? No money for gas, and/or no vehicle.....
...and you want to call them "idiots"??

I'm getting real tired of seeing comments like this. If the government wanted everyone out, they should have made enough transportation available to make that happen.

The only "idiots" I see are those claiming to be in charge.

8. I'm going to throw out a ray of hope
After 9/11 the missing toll went up as high as 7000, and then receded downward as names were found to be double counted, and others made contact with family, but not the rescue services. The final toll at the WTC was a little over 2800.

I just have to believe that there is the chance that this scenario could play out again this way.
