I just called my city Mayor's office and |
|
suggested maybe the city could take in a couple of New Orleans families. I left the message with his secretary, but I know she will pass it on. If all the medium to smaller sized cities could do this, maybe they could all be relocated into a house. There are enough cities that size in the U.S. and a couple of families in each city wouldn't strain their budgets too much and maybe solve a problem. How about it du'ers, sound good? If it does, call your mayor's office.

3. I'm going to a meeting in the morning |
|
to find out what a local charity has planned. The Director spoke today about having a bus ready to go down in 7-10 days. Said they need money, they would ask for items donated, but not sure specifics yet. they only want to take specific help. They want to head West of NO. they will have to take their own fuel to get back. Plans are still in the works if they will go down to help and bring releif or just bring people back - he thought he could house up to 100 for up to a month. I discussed with the Mayor. He's behind the effort - he also discussed 2 other charities that have plans in the works. Our community will do something to help - they are making their contacts, still working out the details of where to go/how to get there, what permits etc.

4. That's the right idea! |
|
These people may never be able to go home. We can't have them transferring from stadium to stadium. We've got to get them back to a somewhat normal life. Well done!!

5. our state is transporting 1,000 victims and my state agency is helping |
|
we received an offer from someone who has 500 vacant apartments (!) which have been made available for them.
Our agency is also taking claims for unemployment insurance. About half our staff is working tomorrow, Sat., to "man" the phones.
I've spent the day amending our rules so we can pay public assistance to these individuals.
We've been getting offers to help from all over. 1,000 isn't many but it wasn't as difficult as we thought and in some way quite fun (helping always is). I hope we offer to take more.
I'm in lily white Utah. Could be some culture shock. Which will be good for us.
The state really does have a structure in place to help these people. Housing agencies, public assistance, medicaid and health departments. Get your state to do it. It's not that hard.
