ON CSPAN: Cong. Black Caucus on Superdome outrage
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 05:30 PM by AirAmFan
Right now (6:20 NY time Friday) CSPAN is rebroadcasting this morning's CBC forum at the National Press Club. Eli Cummings, Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, Jesse Jackson Jr., and others made some POWERFUL statements about the abysmal failure of the White House and "Homeland Insecurity" in Louisiana. "Outrage" is the word of the day. And these Congresspeople called on large corporations by name (Hilton, United, Walmart, food companies, water bottlers) to do a lot more, NOW!

Kilpatrick says the conditions in the Astrodome are "slave-like". Another representative compared this weeks events to those of the 1927 flood in Louisiana, when blacks were rounded up for forced labor and "used as sandbags".

8. That's not their way. But some Michigan corporations are
apparently being organized by the mayor of Detroit and his mom, who's on ome of the most powerful committees in Congress.

One thing I forgot to mention in the lead-in is the new model of help for another city explained in the CSPAN briefing by Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, mother of Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. The City of Detroit apparently has lined up immediate resources to start ABSORBING 500 New Orleans families long-term. Northwest Airlines is prepared to pick up 500 families at Armstrong Airport and fly them to Detroit. The Detroit Public Schools will enroll the children. Other local corporations and state and local government agencies are prepared to meet other needs of hundreds of immigrants from NOLA.

This may not come to pass, and its motivation might be partly self-serving (for example, more schoolchildren means more State education aid, and Dtroit has been losing population and power within Michigan for decades). But it's ingenious, innovative, dramatic, and apparently at least partly motivated by a generosity that's sorely lacking at the White House and in Congress.

3. don't worry, Haliburton will take care of things
If what I've heard on AAR is correct, the Navy has contracted Haliburton to restore electricity and do other things....wonder if the contract was no-bid and cost plus?

6. WILL BE REBROADCAST Fri at 8:50 pm NY time,
according to a fleeting message at the bottom of the CSPAN screen.

CSPAN is simply broadcasting what happened: A handful of honest people held a briefing where, without PR spinners, the plain TRUTH was told about what's happening in one of the largest cities in the US.

How much of this got onto CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN, or FOX? I saw about 15 seconds of Cummings on CNBC this morning--that's very likely the extent of MSM coverage of this outstanding event.
