Subject: My Hurricane Story -- Car may be available uptown

Story: Hello to anyone and everyone -

I don't know if my car is underwater, but since it's uptown there's a good chance it isn't.

It is unlocked with a key under the mat - a red corolla at 507 Cherokee Street and St. Charles. It's in a drive way. If anyone needs it to get out, please go there!! My phone number is (337) 349 - 7661. There is a trunk in the back seat - throw it out and fit as many people as you can!

The car has a spare on it, so if you make it to the highway, don't go too fast.

Anne

41. Those Feds putzing around...
...on the scene bear a large responsibility as well.

The only thing stopping them from pulling off extraordinary rescue efforts is their boot-licking order-taking mentality.

We should really ask - WWJD? (What Would Jabbar Do?). Would he wait for orders or would he just get it friggin' done?

46. What would Jabbar do, indeed............I think he would walk the whole
lot of those people out of the convention center and DARE the NG to shoot them, then walk them right across the OPEN BRIDGE and out of NOLA.

This calls for massive civil disobedience. You want to stop us from getting to safety, you'll have to kill us.

That's what I would do, I know.

7. Iconoclastic cat you are generous! I put everyone who died
since Wednesday on Bush's judgment day list. The NG should've been alerted before the storm it, just in case. The water drops should've been done much earlier, as well as insulin drops. We have a country with a lot of diabetics. And no
one can live without water.

Story: Doctors, patients and staff are stranded at Baptist Hospital (extended campus of Memorial Hospital). My brother, Dr. Bryant King, is stranded there and has been sending occassional text messages to let us know the situation.

Yesterday, he explained that management at the hospital decided to selctivley withold food and water from patients. Doctors are being forced to decide who gets to live and who will starve to death. The hospital is surrounded by 8ft of flood water; There is no more electricity, food or water. Windows are broken out and people are starving.

There has been very little press about this hosptial, but conditions are deplorable and they need to be evacuated. My brother asked that we please get them out of there. Please let the press know that Baptist Hospital (2700 Napolean Blv) is BEGGING FOR HELP!!!

Subject: My Hurricane Story -- FEMA and Red Cross

Story: Evacuated as governmental officials requested. In Little Rock called the Little Rock American Red Cross for some assistance. They told me I could go to a shelter. When I inquired about temporaary housing, etc.,vouchers they told me I had to go to the Am Red Cross in New Orleans where the disaster occurred. I explained we were not being allowed back there and were trying to get our lives going they offered shelter in a gym and thats it. So much for the years for donations to their organization.
Same goes for FEMA, submitted required forms and spoke with them and was told would have to wait to I can meet with a FEMA reprensative in New Orleans that there were thousands of FEMA reps there. They gave me the same response as the Am Red Cross you will have to what until you get back in the New Orleans area.
If this would have happened in Washington DC, New York, Nantucket Virginia,eastern sea board, west coast or up north the support would have been there immediately but southeast Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama are in the south so take your time and follow all the regulations to the ''t'' and create a few of your own to delay assistance.

Story: I live in Oregon, but like Americans all over the country, I've been horrified and heartbroken by the news stories from New Orleans, a city I've always loved not only for its beauty but for the warm-heartedness of its citizens.

Finally, this morning, I'd had enough. I emailed Mark C. Smith, Public Information Officer at the Louisiana Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness. I thought you might be interested in his response to what I had to say. Note especially the description of the Convention Center as "not an approved site"!

I don't understand why you aren't moving heaven and earth to get water IMMEDIATELY to the refugees in the N.O. Convention Center. As of this
morning, according to NBC news reports, they STILL DON'T HAVE WATER, two babies have died already of dehydration, and more will die today if they don't get water and formula.

There is no excuse not to do WHATEVER IS NEEDED, be it air-drops or armed convoys. It is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE for American babies to die of dehydration.

Friday pleas for help from Times-Picayune blog

By Editorandpublisher.com staff
NEW YORK -- If anything, the situation grows more desperate in New Orleans, as these very up-close and personal, and terrifying, pleas for help at a Times-Picayune readers' forum revealed Friday morning -- including many patients and staff trapped in hospitals.

***

Rescue... Please Help! A friend's Mom is trapped in her house at 2220 Fern street, off of Claiborne. Her name is Grace Troxcalir. She is running out of heart medicine. Please anyone that can help - Please rescue her.
Thank you - Eliza Schneller.

***

100 residents are still left in The Point (Algiers) and they are now under seige from the mob that was released from the convention center. They have had to kill 4 people in an attempt to protect their property and life.

Please get state police in!

14. Must Read: The Positive Stories Must Get Out (Get your tissue out)
I've snipped some of this man's post to get to the stories . . .

The Positive Stories Must Get Out
Name: Robert LeBlanc

Home: 9858769172

Email: rlrenrec@aol.com

Subject: My Hurricane Story -- The Positive Stories Must Get Out

Story: Please help me to get this story out. We need to get the truth out and these people helped.

Jeff Rau, a family and now personal friend to whom I will forever be linked, and I were volunteering with a boat and pulling people out of the water on Wednesday. I have a first-hand experience of what we encountered. In my opinion, everything that is going on in the media is a complete bastardization of what is really happening. The result is that good people are dying and losing family members. <snip>

Eight people in particular who stood out during our rescue and whose stories deserve to be told:

1.) We were in motor boats all day ferrying people back and forth approximately a mile and a half each way (from Carrolton down Airline Hwy to the Causeway overpass). Early in the day, we witnessed a black man in a boat with no motor paddling with a piece of lumber. He rescued people in the boat and paddled them to safety (a mile and a half). He then, amidst all of the boats with motors, turned around and paddled back out across the mile and a half stretch to do his part in getting more people out. He refused to give up or occupy any of the motored boat resources because he did not want to slow us down in our efforts. I saw him at about 5:00 p.m., paddling away from the rescue point back out into the neighborhoods with about a half mile until he got to the neighborhood, just two hours before nightfall. I am sure that his trip took at least an hour and a half each trip, and he was going back to get more people knowing that he'd run out of daylight. He did all of this wit! h a t!
wo-by-four.

2.) One of the groups that we rescued were 50 people standing on the bridge that crosses over Airline Hwy just before getting to Carrolton Ave going toward downtown. Most of these people had been there, with no food, water, or anyplace to go since Monday morning (we got to them Wed afternoon) and surrounded by 10 feet of water all around them. There was one guy who had been there since the beginning, organizing people and helping more people to get to the bridge safely as more water rose on Wednesday morning. He did not leave the bridge until everyone got off safely, even deferring to people who had gotten to the bridge Wed a.m. and, although inconvenienced by loss of power and weather damage, did have the luxury of some food and some water as late as Tuesday evening. This guy waited on the bridge until dusk, and was one of the last boats out that night. He could have easily not made it out that night and been stranded on the bridge alone.

3.) The third story may be the most compelling. I will not mince words. This was in a really rough neighborhood and we came across five seemingly unsavory characters. One had scars from what seemed to be gunshot wounds. We found these guys at a two-story recreational complex, one of the only two-story buildings in the neighborhood. They broke into the center and tried to rustle as many people as possible from the neighborhood into the center. These guys stayed outside in the center all day, getting everyone out of the rec center onto boats. We approached them at approximately 6:30 p.m., obviously one of the last trips of the day, and they sent us further into the neighborhood to get more people out of homes and off rooftops instead of getting on themselves. This at the risk of their not getting out and having to stay in the water for an undetermined (you have to understand the uncertainly that all of the people in these accounts faced without having any info on the resc! ue ef!
forts, how far or deep the flooding was, or where to go if they want to swim or walk out) amount of time. These five guys were on the last boat out of the neighborhood at sundown. They were incredibly grateful, mentioned numerous times 'God is going to bless y'all for this'. When we got them to the dock, they offered us an Allen Iverson jersey off of one of their backs as a gesture of gratitude, which was literally probably the most valuable possession among them all. Obviously, we declined, but I remain tremendously impacted by this gesture.

I don't know what to do with all of this, but I think we need to get this story out. Some of what is being portrayed among the media is happening and is terrible, but it is among a very small group of people, not the majority. They make it seem like New Orleans has somehow taken the atmosphere of the mobs in Mogadishu portrayed in the book and movie "Black Hawk Down," which is making volunteers (including us) more hesitant and rescue attempts more difficult. As a result, people are dying. My family has been volunteering at the shelters here in Houma and can count on one hand the number of people among thousands who have not said "Thank You." or "God Bless You." Their lives shattered and families torn apart, gracious just to have us serve them beans and rice.

If anything, these eight people's stories deserve to be told, so that people across the world will know what they really did in the midst of this devastation. So that it will not be assumed that they were looting hospitals, they were shooting at helicopters. It must be known that they, like many other people that we encountered, sacrificed themselves during all of this to help other people in more dire straits than their own.

It is also important to know that this account is coming from someone who is politically conservative, believes in capitalism and free enterprise, and is traditionally against many of the opinions and stances of activists like Michael Moore and other liberals on most of the hot-topic political issues of the day. Believe me, I am not the political activist. This transcends politics. This is about humanity and helping mankind. We need to get these people out. Save their lives. We can sort out all of the political and social issues later. People need to know the truth of what is going on at the ground level so that they know that New Orleans and the people stranded there are, despite being panicked and desperate, gracious people and they deserve the chance to live. They need all of our help, as well.

This is an accurate account of things. Jeffery Rau would probably tell the same exact stories.

Regards,
Robert LeBlanc

25. Yeah, same thing happened after Andrew here in Florida
Once the Feds FINALLY started helping, the media made it seem that all was well. The media is focusing on New Orleans, but many other outlaying areas, both there and in Mississippi are really suffering - and the extent of the devastation is truly not known. And it won't be known for weeks.

44. This is surreal. People are dying from neglect.
What is wrong with the Bush administration? Why didn't they get help there immediately?

From each story I read I hear news of people being afraid to seek help because of armed looters and gangs of thugs. Many people will die because of that.

I pray that the National Guard can restore order there and start the work of rescuing everyone.

Subject: My Hurricane Story -- Stranded on the West Bank- Carol Sue Ave.

Story: My friend Judy Harper, 5th grade teacher at Elmwood Park Academy on Carol Sue Avenue in Gretna, is stranded at 1784 Carol Sue Avenue. She had phone service until Thursday morning. She said there were 8 people there total, including 3 children (one of which is 3 months old). She said they siphoned all available gasoline to fuel a generator hooked to a freezer. They were draining apartment hot water heaters for drinking water. They took soft drinks from the school and food from everyone's freezer in the apt complex. They were fine on Wednesday, but worried about the infant and worried about medications and the eventuality of food and water running out. The Jefferson Parish emergency number is working. They said mass looting is constant in the area and I fear for my friend Judy's life. Anyone who knows ANYTHING current about the area, please, please email me at hollyhatten@yahoo.com

67. E&P: NOLA.com Seeks Experienced Web Producers to Help With Katrina Coverag

By Jay DeFoore

Published: September 02, 2005 12:14 PM ET

NEW YORK Joe Territo, director of content development for Advance Publications' Internet division, is looking for experienced Web producers to help out with NOLA.com, the Web site of the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

The Web site has become the main outlet for the paper as the flooding from Hurricane Katrina has devastated its print operation. The Times-Picayune has relocated its newsroom to Baton Rouge, and on Friday distributed its first print issue since the storm hit Monday.

The following message from Territo is currently circulating on various Internet forums: "We need to find skilled producers who want to work for us on a temporary basis, at first from home, and eventually down in Baton Rogue (as soon as we stabilize an office location for them), as a part of the NOLA.com team. I don't have details on what we can offer them in terms of pay as of yet. We don't have an idea of how long this assignment will be for, but, depending upon the person, it could be a number of weeks, or even a number of months."

68. National Next Of Kin Registry (NOKR)
http://pleasenotifyme.org/nok/restricted/home.htm

The National Next Of Kin Registry (NOKR) is a new high-speed solution to locating your Next Of Kin in urgent situations. NOKR is designed as an emergency contact system to help if you or your family member is missing, injured or deceased. NOKR is a free service to the public as well as the Local and State agencies using the search service.

The injury or passing of a loved one is a difficult time for families and friends. This sad time is compounded when you're not informed when a loved one is injured or passes on. This happens when Local and State Agencies are unable to locate a family member or Next Of Kin. This would happen for numerous reasons:

* A lack of information about family or contacts
* A lack of resources available to search for family members or "Next Of Kin"

NOKR will provide services not “if” a tragedy should occur, not “if” a disaster should happen but “when” these events come about.

NOKR News Update:
The NOKR organization has many new registered Emergency Contact Volunteers (ECV’s) in and outside the Hurricane devastated areas. NOKR ECV’s, are registering families and individuals that have been displaced. Once NOKR receives these registration forms we will pass this information along to local and state authorities to make contact with families seeking information. Please help support any ECV’s that may come to your Print shop to make copies of the NOKR registration form. NOKR ECV’s will also need your help to ship these forms back to the NOKR office overnight. Please help provide this service if you are approached. All ECV’s will be able to provide you with their NOKR ID number as a volunteer. If you have any questions please email admin@pleasenotifyme.org

Thank You Mark Cerney Executive Director NOKR

NOKR is currently in the midst of handling its highest registration and call flow to date. NOKR is a FREE public service and is in need of your charitable donations to remain so. Our goal is to provide this service to all Americans stateside and abroad absolutely free of charge. NOKR is the safest and most secure way to maintain this information. Only Public Trust agencies, such as local, state and federal police agencies can access this information in case of an emergency. If you are interested in supporting NOKR please email roger.castro@pleasenotifyme.org NOKR is embarking on a historic national campaign to register 50 million American with our ROTA campaign or Reach-Out-To-America Campaign. Again your support and awareness is greatly appreciated.

Volunteer
NOKR needs new volunteer (ECV's) to help register families and individuals in the affected states of Hurricane Katrina, so that matches can be made with families seeking information.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Why should I register myself or my family with NOKR?
By registering with NOKR, you will inform emergency agencies Nationally and Internationally who should be contacted if you or your family member is missing, injured or deceased. Many people think that if they are carrying a driver's license, passport or identification card, authorities will know who their emergency contact is, this identification only indicates who you are not who should be contacted. Often times though, the information is not current or readily available and it becomes very difficult to locate a contact, who will speak for you or your family member when they can’t? NOKR is the solution.
70. 100-150 Trapped at the Park Plaza
Trapped at the Park Plaza
Can someone get to the authorities there. I have worked for the past three years at the Park Plaza Hotel in NO. The GM called me yesterday from a pay phone that works in the hotel. There are between 100-150 ppl still trapped in there surrounded by water. NO one has been there at all, no one knows they are there. They have been on the fire escapes outside of the building but because of the water, no one has been close to them. There are four elderly people that were guest there that are critical and the GM is desperate to get them out to get help but it needs to be by boat. I have tried and tried emergency lines but cannot get anyone to answer. If you can help, please pass this along. Thanks,
Sarah Parmley
