David Brock on Jim Lehrer just said,
he's mad at Bush, he thinks this will be very bad for the conservatives and that having the NO people in this situation is akin to "leaving wounded on the battlefield". And he's the conservative commentator. Strong stuff.

10. He's a FORMER conservative
But quickly saw through all the lies and deceptions during the Clinton impeachment debacle and was appalled.

Ever since, he's been a champion against GOP lies and distortions.

13. He should have said...
"It *should* be bad for the Republicans, and, speaking for myself, I'm extremely troubled that the economic and government policies that I've advocated for years have largely contributed to suffering not seen in our country since our worst of times, the Great Depression, and the Civil War.

"I'm really going to have to rethink the basic foundation and principles on which I've been basing opinion for these last couple decades."

14. Brooks. Realizes this is a bursting point New Deal change scale event.
Brooks! Edit your thread title!

Very interesting discussion with Brooks, Oliphant, and Clarence Page. Brooks made a good point that events like this expose the reality of how the rich have been taking care of themselves at the expense of the poor and can be the bursting point that leads to changes on the scale of the New Deal. Drew the analogy of the Jonestown flood where a lake owned by robber barons including Andrew Carnegie was part of the impetus for the progressive reforms at the turn of the 19th to 20th century. Analogy of the New Orleans flood in the 20s that helped usher in the New Deal. Analogy of the 70s that people just wanted to be over which helped usher Reagan in. This is more like the 20s when Republicans were in power.

Populism will be transcendent for a while.

He was livid. He said this disaster would be like our seventies wake-up call - a strong call for government accountablity.

18. Personally...
.... I think there were a lot of people, be they the man/woman on the street, a journalist, a pundit, a politician - who, because of the ongoing debacle in Iraq, were starting to have doubts about the Dim Son.

Now, there doubts have been erased completely. Whatever vestige of hope they had that we really had a capable president have been dashed for good.

I guess we'll see.

19. Just watched it Central Time Zone
I am shocked. Cried through almost the entire episode. I NEVER thought I would hear David Brooks criticize that horse's ass. He made Oliphant sound like the conservative for crying out loud.

Holy shit - he said that he was mad just watching footage earlier in the program.

I wanted it to go on and on. Does anyone have it on video?

21. they agreed to bigger govt in hopes of keeping America safer
true conservatives find themselves in a lose/lose situation. America has undergone the largest government expansion since the New Deal, but they willingly compromised their philosophy of smaller government for the promise of a security that does not exist.
