So what is the true situation in Baton Rouge? |
|
There were wild rumors all over the internet about the unstable and anarchic situation in Baton Rouge. The Shreveport and Baton Rouge newspapers each had a piece on how there had been rumors about this that were unsubstantiated. I was not sure if this was an attempt to quell panic or if it had been the stuff of internet lore. My daughter has a house there (with two cats still there but being fed) and is in Mississippi but her roommate yesterday (who is a ditz anyway) said things were getting bad and not to come back for now and then went to their parents' house east of the city. Daughter is a student at LSU and they are supposed to start classes again Tuesday but she does not know if it is safe. I called LSU and was assured everything was just fine and it was safe and they laughed when I asked about anarchy run amok and said - no, they live there and it is fine.
So what is really going on there?

I'm sitting right here in the Middle of BR at home with my kids--going through my closet to find clothes to give while they go through the pantry for cans. No feeling of any threat whatsoever.

A couple of minor incidents yesterday. Lots of traffic...lines at gas stations. Most everybody's attention is on helping in some tangible way (giving clothes, canned food and bottled water, etc). My wife is serving food tonight next to the community center/shelter in Port Allen. Believe me, if I were at all concerned about safety I would have urged her not to do. In sum, it's perfectly safe now.
