1. I had hoped things would get at least a bit better there ...
... God bless them. I feel rather helpless.

2. What a crock of shit
In spite of everything they've endured, every crowd shown on TV these past days has been civil, damn near placid.

13. It's amazing.
Even last night, when food and water for hundreds was handed out to a crowd of 15-20,000 the crowd at the CC conducted itself in an exemplary fashion - despite many of those people being without food or water or both for days. I was shocked, amazed, and gratified by their civility.

14. That's right
And that's why I'm not buying a radioed report from an "embedded" reporter (Judith Miller, anyone?) without any confirmation other than her word. It smells like something's going on and I don't like it.

18. from what i understood from her report
it seemed as she was more concerned about the edginess of the troops located there...also quoting a local sheriff at the scene...

the stranded people there are being treated as potentially hostile, wich in turn incites emotions on both sides i guess...still thousands there and it's getting dark...they probably will have to stay there another night.

4. Why does this all feel orchestrated?
Our government seemed to create conditions that turned NOLA into a hornet's nest.

I get this feeling this is all part of some experiment in human behavior.

Am I being nutty?

19. I agree
While I think it has only been through fiction that I've been previously exposed to such a possibilty, it very eerily looks like some kind of a crescendo of sorts.
I know it sounds all X-files, but things in the last few years just seem to have taken a pretty sinister tone in general, and too often unsettling.

24. Yes, Sydnie...
...like "Trading Places." Exactly.

And we all saw what happened to Dan Akroyd's character. One minute he was getting his nails manicured. The next minute, he was wasted in the subway with a giant salmon tangled in his beard.

32. The Superdome is being turned into a concentration camp
Soon the germs in that gumbo they are drinking is going to turn deadly and by the end of the week most of these people will be dead. Then we will know what germ warfare looks like.

I wondered ever since I heard him say that whether it was true. Now we know.

6. Her tone and tenor has drastically changed from the time when
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 07:15 PM by Spazito
she was enbedded with the relief trucks going into NO. She was positively exuberent, she now sound quite frightened, imo.

What stood out for me was there are STILL NO BUSES for the people at the convention center! Now that bush's photo-op is done, it looks like everything is back to 'normal', aka TARFU

Editing my post to add this:
It seems SOME were able to get buses in a more timely manner than others:

3:34 P.M. - (AP) The evacuation of Superdome refugees was interrupted briefly when school buses rolled up so some 700 guests and employees from the Hyatt hotel. They were move to the head of the line to be evacuated -- much to the amazement of those who had been crammed in the stinking Superdome for days.

The 700 had been trapped in the Hyatt just like the others, but conditions were considerably cleaner, even without running water, than the unsanitary crush inside the dome.

26. There is a reason for that.
It has been discussed here on DU already.

The faster you can get rid of the tourists, the sooner they STOP taking up relief resources. They will be able to take care of themselves once they are out of there, and the MREs they would have eaten can go to a real refugee.

Keep them there and they have to be fed MREs. The refugees are going to have to be fed MREs even after they are taken out.

Sometimes reality bites.

29. That's a crock, imo
You do not STOP the evacuation of people in much worse shape in order to take out people who, while having been in uncomfortable circumstances, were not starving or dying of thirst. There is NO excuse for that.

I doubt that if you were in that group waiting at the convention center watching these buses full of well off people pass by, you would have thought, oh, great idea.

12. I'll second that thought and raise you a roll or two of toilet paper ....
.... the criminality of Bush's actions is expanding exponentially and multi-dimensionally, by the hour ......

Please let there not be violence; these people have suffered more than they ever, ever should.

Peace.

yesterday are just back from Iraq. We all know they can tend to be a little trigger happy to begin with.

11. If I'd been holed up there since Monday
with little food or water and no toilet facilities, I'd be ready to riot myself.

That's assuming it's true and not some more BushCo psyops via notorious Bush butt-kisser Starr.

16. I doubt they've got enough strength left to riot.
They're dehydrated and starved for almost a week. Rioting is not very plausible.

17. I hope none of those troops loses his/her cool.
It must be real tough, but the last thing we need is a full blown riot caused by an authority figure using bad judgement.

This is almost surreal happening in the US.

20. If only they had known
they would have done something. The NO Mayor's pleas for help fell on deaf ears for 4 days but he will be blamed just the same. FEMA should be disbanded after this.
