Kanye West on NBC: "George Bush Doesn't Care About Black People."
On the telethon, standing next to Mike Myers, singer Kanye West just went off the teleprompter and slammed the response to the tragedy. Haltingly, nervously, he absolutely skewered the response, put in a good word for the Red Cross, and then asked:

"We know that most of the people who would be responding are off fighting a war in another place. And those who have come back, have just been given permission to shoot us."

Mike Myers then tried to stay on script, said his next bit, and turned back to West, who said:

"George Bush Doesn't care about Black people."

They cut away immediately to a stunned Chris Tucker.

Wow.

By the way, the Harry Connick, Jr. and Wynton Marsalis performance of "Do you know what it Means to Miss New Orleans" was heartbreaking.

2. There goes his gig on the football show next week
Kanye is gonna get Dixie Chicked big time.

Of course, when N.O. rebuilds a suitable concert facility (or Jazz Fest grounds!), he will sell it out for nights on end... as he was introduced at Live 8, "the extraordinary Kanye West"! :bounce:

15. Absolutely! He just made the cover of TIME magazine!

He was on Good Morning America with Diane Sawyer this morning.

He is SMART, writes, produces, sings, dances...he is the MAN in the eyes of the HIP-HOP world and now, he has the attention of the World!

Go Kenye! You said what most of the sane world wanted to say!

Brave,bold and Black!
Speak for your people my Brother, SPEAK for all the rage and hurt inside of all of us.

25. Don't worry
Kayne won't be Dixie Chicked. If they try to Dixi Chick him it will just give him more material to write songs with LOL. Kayne's fan base is totally different then the Dixi Chicks. This outburst might gain him more fans. :toast:

19. Awesome Kanye and jazz
The jazz was ripping. Souful and exuberant as great jazz is. Mr. McGraw sang somthing about Jesus. Whatever.
Kanye had to say what he said. It's the truth, the truth hurts. This disaster hurts. But it's the reality and we have to face it.
Were the young people on the news asking for help any different from any other young people you know?? Except maybe for their skin?
As a country that values each other - and we do as Americans; we have to stand against those whom do not. All of us.
Forget about politics. Bush and his cronies are the enemies of true American values.
Let's all stand behind those whom are courageous enough to say it.

27. Kanye West's "Late Registration"
People out there wanting to support Kanye, but aren't into hip-hop should really check out his new CD "Late Registration". It is Co-produced by Jon Brion who was one of the people to make Fiona Apple a big star. It has excellent production, and even though it may not be the best lyrical hip-hop of the year, it is definitely the best musically. Give it a shot, you might really dig it.

29. Thanks for Nominating

I am still trying to think of such a moment on national TV, from out of the blue.

Just can't think of one.

I recall that Eartha Kitt blasted Pres. Johnson at the WH. but that was not actually seen on TV.

I recall that Martha Mitchell opened her mouth and spoke the TRUTH about the Nixon administration. That was beautiful but it was not seen on Television. Recall that she "died" with a bit of mystery soon after.

33. Katrina helped a lot of people to find their humanity

Funny how the Christian Right has not one word to say about all the babies that were lost and those that died in New Orleans.

But, this crisis touched the hearts and minds of the world.

I am Black but I have been uplifted by the outpouring of support for my people by those here at DU and those in the media.

The Media knows that what happened in NO would not have happened in a White community. They saw the injustice and the should be saluted for pointing it out with their words and their cameras.

This attitude toward African American poor people was a LIHOP IMO and BUSH should certainly take the blame for allowing it to happen.

i am also uplifted thinking maybe we can break this thing wide open
but oh yeah when you see elitist and insular media screaming for help then you know it must finally resonate in a way they cannot shake

many will never be the same
and thank God for that~~

and its clear many agree with you
absolutely let it happen

i have such a heavy heart about all this but there is now definitely a light in there about what may lie ahead

so glad and privileged to be here with you

36. We've all been thinking it but ... they're trying to get people to DONATE
Yeah, we've all said Bush doesn't care about black people, over and over, in the last few days. Kanye has a right to say it on TV.

BUT! Maybe some people will give more because of those remarks, but others won't give at all. That may not have been the best forum in which to deliver those remarks ... where you're TRYING TO RAISE MONEY.

41. "By Any Means Necessary," he had to say it

His heart was filled and he could not hold it any longer.

He was speaking after seeing the suffering of his people, and others, that are not allowed to have a voice in White America.

If not now, when?

His voice and his words reached millions of people around the globe.
The Red Cross should have been sending that message about giving to the poor/people of all races and getting the food/clothes/water to the people ASAP and they were not speaking clearly.

If some of the people that were offended by his words don't want to give to the Red Cross, they can give to the George Bush or Pat Robertson Campaign Chest. I am sure that GW and Pat will give the donations immediately to Trent Lott to take care of his rebuilding efforts.
