Battle Hymn of New Orleans
Our eyes have seen the chaos on the streets of New Orleans.
Bush has failed the people living there and trampled on their dreams,
Failed to see the aged dying, or hear the children's screams.
Our outrage will live on.
Never let this be forgotten,
Never let this be forgotten,
Never let this be forgotten,
Our outrage will live on.

He can fly across the city way up high in Air Force One,
Pose for photos with poor people that he otherwise would shun,
He can lie and make excuses, but still he cannot run
From outrage that lives on.
Never let this be forgotten,
Never let this be forgotten,
Never let this be forgotten,
Our outrage will live on.

For the aid that was too little and too late, he is to blame.
The deaths and all the suffering, his everlasting shame.
He never learned that "President" is more than just a name.
Our outrage will live on.
Never let this be forgotten,
Never let this be forgotten,
Never let this be forgotten,
Our outrage will live on.

The armies of compassion are quite real and they will reach
Out to help the people Bush has offered only hollow speech.
As for Bush himself, there is only one remedy -- impeach!
Or outrage will live on.
Never let this be forgotten,
Never let this be forgotten,
Never let this be forgotten,
Our outrage will live on.

3. Second line of second stanza
Replace "otherwise would" with "would have" to keep the meter.

Sorry, first week of school and all :)

13. I don't agree: otherwise is the correct meter

It's fifteen beats, as follows:

Bush has failed-the people living-there and trampled-on their dreams
Pose for phot-os with-poor people-that he other-wise would shun

20. I think we're stressing different syllables
He can FLY across the CITy way up HIGH in Air Force ONE,
Pose for PHOtos with poor PEOPLe that he otherwise would SHUN,

Works better when it's:

He can FLY across the CITy way up HIGH in Air Force ONE,
Pose for PHOtos with poor PEOPLe that he would have SHUNNED,

(what's the technical term for this opem? Trochaic-something-or-other? Undergrad classes, where are you when I need you?)

On second thought, I suppose it works either way. Great work, Highplainsdem, it'll make a good email.

9. This is important. Music is the fabric of our lives
and the hymn is so integral to our heritage. Thanks for the new verses.

Did you write? This is just great writing. Very powerful.

10. Yes, I wrote it. Thank you, all of you, for the replies. It was a late-
night inspiration -- the verses came really quickly after the first line came out of the blue -- and I posted it as soon as I'd finished it, though I wasn't sure whether this was the right forum for it. I've been feeling so much anguish over what's happening, and writing this gave me a different way to express that grief and anger.

Hearing it on the streets of D.C. on the 24th would be outstanding!
